WIAA regional play for girls’ basketball has opened and the boys’ follow with regional play next week. One girls’ team and one boys’ squad from Catholic high schools in the diocese earned top seeds.
The Lourdes Academy (Oshkosh) girls are the top ranked team in Division 4 and received a #1 tournament seed. Lourdes only defeat during the season was to Middleton, a 19-3 Division 1 squad. Senior Katie Van Scyoc, a Drake University recruit, leads the team in scoring (20.4 per game) and rebounding (7.3). Sophomore Alexis Rolph and senior Ellie DeGroot also score in double figures. DeGroot is the team’s top three-point shooter (60). Rolph leads the team in assists (131) and steals (102).
The undefeated Xavier (Appleton) boys’ basketball team earned a #1 tournament seed in Division 3. The Bay Conference champions are led offensively by junior guards Hunter Plamann (21 ppg) and Sam Ferris (13.7 ppg). Junior forward Nate DeYoung averages a double-double (12.1 points and 10.6 rebounds per game) for the Hawks. In the most recent polls, Xavier was ranked second behind Ripon.

The St. Thomas Aquinas Academy (Marinette) boys’ basketball enters the WIAA Division 5 tournament as a #10 seed. The Cavaliers deserve praise for battling all season with a varsity roster of only six players.
The Lourdes Academy boys are a #7 seed in Division 4. The Knights are among the top teams in the Trailways – North Conference despite dealing with multiple injuries. Senior standout Evan Ganther missed eight games due to a dislocated elbow. Fellow senior Sawyer McCue missed 14 games and Sam Gelhar, who averaged 10.1 points and 7.1 rebounds per game as a junior, missed the entire season due to injury.
