St. Mary Central senior Matt Flunker pleasantly caught me by surprise during a recent interview. I asked captains of both the Zephyr girls and boys basketball teams about their plans after graduation. Flunker shared that he will attend the University of Wisconsin in Madison, and added that he plans to try out to be Bucky Badger.  I have always considered Bucky among the top collegiate mascots, so I was impressed.

I visited the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity in Manitowoc on May 1 for their traditional May crowning. Here is one of the photos from the crowning. It shows postulant Pam Peasel crowning a statue of Mary. She was assisted by 90-year-old Sr. Bernadine Manthey, not pictured.

Students from Shepherd of the Hills School in Eden, located south of Fond du Lac in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, presented two dramatizations of the Stations of the Cross at St. Bernard Church in Green Bay April 8.

Here at The Compass, like at other newspapers, we're trying to define the relationship between our print and online editions. In this quest a lot of questions surface. For example, should we wait until the publication date (Fridays) of the paper to post stories to our Web site or should we post them earlier in the week? Presently we've been posting stories as early as Wednesdays, but usually on Thursdays.

Earlier this year, The Compass published a column written by Doug Kmiec, a law professor at Pepperdine University School of Law. The column focused on Sen. Ted Kennedy's legacy of faith. Reaction to that column was generally negative, with readers challenging Kmiec's positive portrayal of Sen. Kennedy, a supporter of legalized abortion.

While editing photos of Archbishop Timothy Dolan, taken during my time at the Milwaukee Catholic Herald, I came across one photo featuring a familiar face for folks in Green Bay. (See below)

An earlier posting about Archbishop Timothy Dolan's move to New York has gained some national attention. Whispers in the Loggia, perhaps the most informative and respected Catholic blog site on the Web, added a mention of The Compass and a slideshow of Archbishop Dolan photos. Here's a link to the blog entry.

The Esto Vir men's conference at St. Pius Church in Appleton broke attendance records this year, with about 650 men participating in the conference. As mentioned earlier, I spoke to Deacon Harold Burke-Sivers. He had some interesting comments about Barack Obama. His second address of the day was also noteworthy. My interview with Deacon Harold will appear next week. In the meantime, here are a few photos from the men's conference.
