We have a pope

The bells have started and the new pope is elected.  Who, we will know soon.  Watching the live feed on TV reminded me of the last time I heard the bells at St. Peter's.  It was after the Angelus of Pope John Paul II one November Sunday.  The bells are deafening.  And yet, you don't want to leave that square. How those there must feel now.

The Compass website has a news service story about C.S. Lewis and how he is finding a new audience in Britain. He's been popular in the U.S. for a long time.  I, of course, first read The Chronicles of Narna."  But my favorite Lewis book, I would have to say, is "The Screwtape Letters." Of course, I often say, "Ouch" when I read it.

So, one year ago (on Nov. 27), we began using the new translation of the Roman Missal.  As we approach, once again, the first Sunday of Advent, what's your impression of the Missal? What's your favorite part?  (Personally, I like the beginning of the Eucharistic Prayer II: "Make holy, therefore, these gifts, we pray, be sending down your Spirit upon them like the dewfall." The image of the Spirit and dewfall, like a fresh summer morning, is wonderful.  And what's your least favorite, or something that gives you the most difficulty?  I admit that I still stumble through the Gloria and the Creed.

Today's early morning shooting of movie goers in Aurora, Colorado, moves us to pray. At latest report, 12 people who had gone to view "The Dark Knight Rises" were killed by a lone shooter and another 38 injured.  Archbishop Samuel Aquila of Denver and auxiliary Bishop James Conley issued the following press release today.

When I was a child, my parents would take us to Holy Hill, the shrine of Mary, Help of Christians in Hubertus in SW Wisconsin. Climbing the tower was a feat for a six-year-old. And prayer at the Shrine chapel, with its many crutches left as testimonial to healings, was memorable. Now, the Basilica Shrine offers a virtual tour of the upper church at its website. So if you can't get there by car, get there by mouse.
