My dear brothers and sisters in Christ:
The months of May and October have traditionally been dedicated to our Blessed Mother.
In this article, I would like to focus on an approved Marian apparition that happened in 1917 in Portugal. Many of us grew up with some knowledge about the message of Fatima for the need of making reparation for sins, especially against the Immaculate Heart of Mary. After Vatican II, many Marian devotions waned or became misdirected in its primary focus of conversion.

An award-winning 2010 French film, "Of Gods and Men," tells the story of seven French Trappist monks based at their monastery in Algeria. They were kidnapped and beheaded in spring 1996 after being caught up in a bloody conflict between the Algerian government and an extremist Islamic group. The Trappists saw the danger they were in but opted to remain in their monastery. They wanted to continue to serve the local people who were also suffering from the conflict.

Welcome to this beautiful season of the church year we call the Easter season. It runs for 50 days and culminates in the feast of Pentecost Sunday. This is when the Holy Spirit was given to the apostles and empowered them to go forth and teach about Jesus Christ and all that had happened to him and to them (Acts 2).

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
By chance if you are reading The Compass and this column, may I invite you to attend Holy Week services in your parishes: the Holy Thursday Mass of the Lord's Supper; Good Friday services when we commemorate the Lord's Passion and death; and the most important liturgy of the liturgical year, the Easter Vigil on Saturday evening at dusk, when we welcome new people to our faith; and to Easter Sunday celebrations in your parish.
