Fr. Mulhall dies

A Norbertine priest known for his sense of humor, his cheerfulness, and his genuine interest in people died Aug. 7. Fr. Emmanuel Francis Mulhall, O.Praem., was 85.

As a priest of St. Norbert Abbey, Fr. Mulhall had served as a teacher, chaplain and parish priest until retiring a few years ago to St. Norbert Abbey where he was involved in internal and external ministry.

Because of difficulty with walking in his later years, he used a motorized wheelchair for his daily tours of the Abbey grounds, the cloister walks and corridors of the Abbey.

Fr. Muhall was born May 25, 1915, in Cylon, Wis., to William and Nora (Henry) Mulhall. His home parish was Immaculate Conception, New Richmond.

Fr. Mulhall graduated from St. Norbert High School, De Pere, in 1934. He received a bachelor's degree in philosophy from St. Norbert College. He attended Gregg Business College (now Northwestern University), Chicago, and Philadelphia School of Office Business Training.

Fr. Mulhall entered St. Norbert Abbey as a novice on Aug. 28, 1935. He made simple vows on Aug. 28, 1937, and solemn vows on Aug. 28, 1940. He was ordained to the priesthood on June 26, 1941.

Fr. Mulhall taught at Southeast Catholic High School, Philadelphia; Central Catholic High School, Green Bay; and Sisters of Our Lady of Charity Convent, Green Bay, where he also served as chaplain.

He was administrator at St. Mary Parish, Bruce, and at Holy Cross Parish, Bay Settlement. He served as assistant pastor at Sacred Heart Parish, Oscoda, Mich., and at St. John the Evangelist Parish, Essexville, Mich. Fr. Mulhall was associate pastor at St. Willebrord Parish in Green Bay.

Fr. Mulhall was a member of the Shamrock Club in Green Bay and was especially proud of his Irish heritage.

Fr. Mulhall is survived by the Norbertine Community; a sister, Mary, Green Bay; an aunt, Margaret Knutson, New Richmond; and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, John.

Abbot E. Thomas De Wane presided Aug. 11 at the Mass of Christian Burial in the Abbey Church.

Burial was in St. Norbert Cemetery.
