Working to improve lives
Managing cities leads to diocesan properties

Kevin Brunner, the new diocesan director of properties, sees similarities when comparing
his new position to his 21 years managing cities in Wisconsin.
"The goals and objectives are different, but in both cases you are trying to build a better
community," said Brunner, the former city administrator of De Pere. "Whether it be in
the parish or the diocese from a spiritual standpoint or more of a physical community
with the cities, you work to improve people's lives."
Brunner, a graduate of Carthage College, Kenosha, with a master's degree in public
administration from Michigan State, is responsible for all existing diocesan properties and will work with parishes on property and building projects. He will also oversee insurance programs for the diocese and assist with governmental relations.
"Kevin has very broad experience that is perfect for this position," said John Nelson, diocesan director of temporalities. "He is a great asset. The diocese is very fortunate to have a person of his qualifications for its future operations."
"It's stewardship," said Brunner in explaining his job responsibilities. "It's taking good care of what we have and fostering improvement, whether it be building or land or other resources."
Brunner looks forward to visiting the churches, schools and land in the diocese to become more familiar with the properties. Property related issues continue to increase in the diocese as more parishes merge. As a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Parish, De Pere, Brunner has been through the process.
"I've been through the merger there and it's been a beautiful merger," he said. "I have that experience, which may be helpful. I know it can work and work positively."
"In dealing with a closure, there are families that have been there for years and generations so it's extremely delicate," he added. "The key is to find appropriate uses for those properties in the future."
Brunner and his wife, Nancy, a teacher of the deaf and hearing impaired, have three children, Allison, Joel and Aaron. In his free time, Kevin, enjoys running, coaching basketball at Our Lady of Lourdes, and playing with the kids.
"In local government, there are so many evenings," said Kevin. "It was a 24-hour job. I'm looking forward to spending more time with my family."
"I've been active in the church as a parish council member, finance council chair and Renew leader," he added. "I was looking for an opportunity to live my faith more directly. This position gives me that opportunity."
