Sturgeon Bay woman gets state award for dedication to catechesis
Carol Nutini of St. Joseph Parish, Sturgeon Bay, received the Henriette Mackin Award at
the 20th anniversary convention of the Wisconsin Directors of Religious Education
Federation (WDREF).
Nutini was honored for service to catechetical ministry with a state award established in
1986 in honor of the late Henriette Mackin, a Wisconsin resident and founder of Hi-Time
Publishing, who is remembered for her support of professional catechetical ministry. The
award is given to either a paid parish staff member or a volunteer who emulates Ms.
Mackin's dedication and service to catechetics.
In nominating Nutini, Sr. Sandy Peterson, pastoral associate of St. Joseph Parish,
Sturgeon Bay, cited "Carol's ability to serve others in spite of having multiple sclerosis,
and her enthusiasm for the Catholic faith provide inspiration for the many people who
know her."
Also joining in the nomination was Jeanne Ploor, who said "Carol greets the young at
religious education classes. She always has a touch, gentle words, or a hug for those she
encounters. The students open up to her and she is able to listen to them, or offer advice
when requested. Carol seems like an angel. Her joy comes from following his direction
and it is reflected in her eyes."
Pam Marsh, religious education coordinator at St. Joseph Parish, who has known Nutini
for 25 years and has worked with her for 14 years, lauded her work as a volunteer.
"I believe she personifies Ms. Mackin's dedication," Marsh said. "Carol's service and
dedication to the professional catechetical ministry is of the highest caliber. Carol would
come early and remain until the last person would leave, always going that extra mile by
coming early and staying late assisting the coordinator by helping the catechists, often
times even filling in for an absent catechist."
Marsh cited Nutini's constant smile, friendly attitude, attention to detail and continuous
support for the catechists and parents. "Details such as organizing snacks or special
supplies is handled most efficiently by Carol. Often times she covers the cost and donates
the needed snacks or supplies herself," Marsh said.
"Carol is a very spiritual person," Marsh said. "Carol, has been a person of faith
nourished by reading Scripture daily, often attending daily Mass, attending our parish
Bible Study Group, attending our parish missions, and attending special evening
presentations and mini retreats."
Nutini is a Eucharistic minister, and is active in Befriender Ministry, homebound
outreach ministry, Christian Mothers Organization, the pastoral council, Total Board of
Education and Renew.
