Marking 40 years as a bishop

By Patricia Kasten
Compass Associate Editor

Bp. Aloysius Wycislo celebrated 40 years of episcopal ordination Dec. 21.

The bishop, who served as eighth bishop of the Green Bay Diocese, was consecrated an auxiliary bishop of the Chicago Archdiocese on Dec. 21, 1960. He took part in the Second Vatican Council from 1962 to 1965.

Born on June 17, 1908 in Chicago, he was ordained to the priesthood on April 7, 1934 by Card. George Mundelein.

He was named to the See of Green Bay on March 8, 1968 and installed at the Cathedral on April 16, 1968. As required by canon law, he submitted his retirement on his 75th birthday. He continued to serve the diocese until Jan. 25, 1984, when Bp. Adam Maida succeeded him.

Bp. Wycislo continues to assist Bp. Robert Banks and is currently working on a book about his years as a founder of Catholic Relief Services.
