Summoned to Serve
Praying with Sunday's Scriptures
April 8, 2001, Passion (Palm) Sunday, Cycle C
Reading I: Isaiah 50:4-7
Reading II: Philippians 2:6-11
Gospel: Luke 22:14 - 23:56 |
By Carol Jensen
Focus: Jesus' compassion and vision challenge us to walk with him as servants.
Opening Prayer
Jesus, you challenge us to live as servants by your words and
actions. Give us the courage to walk with you. May our steps be
lightened by the knowledge that your spirit and love remain with
us. We pray that our hearts and minds may become ever more united
with you. Amen.
Scripture Sharing: What thought, line or image from the Scripture readings caught your attention?
Reflection: This week we walk those familiar, but always
challenging events of Holy Week. The first reading from Isaiah
describes a leader, like Jesus, who chooses to do the right thing
in the face of disgrace and pain. The reading from Philippians
reminds us that though he willingly accepted pain and disgrace,
Jesus' love and sacrifice is now honored with respect and
rejoicing. Luke's account is full of contrasts and reversals.
We begin our Palm Sunday liturgy with Jesus being hailed as a
king and end with him crucified. The apostles argue among
themselves about which of them is greatest. Jesus tells them that
leaders must serve. Peter promises never to betray, then is
forced to meet Jesus' eyes after the cock has crowed three times.
Can we walk in Jesus' footsteps? Faithful to his vision?
Courageous in the face of opposition? Generous with our love?
How do we respond to pain, disgrace, crisis?
Faith Sharing
1. Which parts of the Passion are the most vivid for you? The
most moving? The most difficult?
2. Share the story of someone who has done or said the right
thing, even though facing opposition, objection or even persecution. How has this been a reality in
your life?
3. How do you, in word or action, honor Jesus and his sacrifice
this week?
Action Response: How are you 'summoned to serve'?
1. This week try to alleviate the suffering of someone who is
dealing with a difficult life situation by a simple gesture: phone call, shared meal, flower, card.
2. Thank someone who has emptied himself /herself for you.
3. Take the portion of the Passion account that most moves you
for a prayer walk this week.
Closing Prayer
Individuals offer their intentions to bring to our God of
compassion and love.
Jesus, you placed your complete trust in your Father. You
humbled yourself rather than seek power and pride. You
challenged us to serve as you served. Draw us to you so that we
may grow in trust, humility and unselfish love. Amen.
