Back to School Store marks 10th year of service
Program provides supplies for low-income children
The Service League of Green Bay's Back to School Store, which provides children of low income families the opportunity to go "Back to School" shopping at no cost, will be offered Aug. 14 at Fort Howard School, Green Bay.
The Service League established the Back to School Store in 1993 in response to the growing number of low-income children attending area elementary schools ill-prepared for the first day of school. The goal of the project is to provide these children with basic school supplies, a new set of clothing including shoes, socks, underwear, shirt and pants, and grooming items. Volunteer hairstylists provide free haircuts for interested students.
Local businesses, individual donors, church groups and service clubs provide all items and services. Approximately 20 parishes from the Green Bay Diocese participate in the donor program for the Back to School Store.
The program continues to grow. The first store in 1993 served 200 children. More than 800 children were assisted last year. Every school within Brown County refers children to the program.
