A night of fashion and music for a good cause

Young designer and bands unite for Aug. 17 show

While in eighth grade at St. Thomas More School in Green Bay, Justin Boltz won first place honors in the school talent show for his clothing designs. It proved to be a springboard for future designing pursuits. Now, at age 16, Botlz is preparing to produce his fifth fashion show. He will showcase his latest designs at "Don't Go Back to School Show" at 8 p.m., Aug. 17, in the Center Court at Washington Commons in Green Bay. Proceeds from the show will be donated to the American Cancer Society.

"Don't go back to school until after you go to this show," said Boltz referring to the satiric name of the event. "You will have a good time."

Boltz, who has been drawing clothes as long as he can remember, describes his fashions as cutting edge. The inspirations for his designs come from a variety of sources.

"I may see a piece of furniture with a great fabric on it and come up with an idea for a design," he said. "I'm not very good at sewing, but I do it. Designing isn't just about making clothes. I like to look at thrift stores to find clothes and then reinvent them."

The Aug. 17 show will feature models displaying both male and female designs geared for teens. In addition to the fashion element of the show, two bands, Rare Faction and Cerebral Static, will perform.

"We have our own style," said Codey Gerarden of Rare Faction in reference to the type of music his band plays.

Gerarden, 15, produces the shows with Boltz.

"It's a month of not sleeping and working hard," said Gerarden, who lists The Doors and Pink Floyd as his musical influences. "We're making flyers and posters, and getting the tickets ready. We have to take care of the lights. It's fun the day of the show, but a lot of work before that day. We're doing something positive."

Their previous show, which also benefited the American Cancer Society, raised $400. Topping that mark is the goal of the "Don't Go Back to School Show."

"We are always trying to raise the bar," said Boltz

Tickets are $5 in advance or $6 at the door. For ticket information, e-mail: factionmusic@aol.com. Those attending the show should use the Adams Street entrance.
