Ground-breaking set for Green Bay cathedral addition
Ceremony will be Sunday
Bp. Robert Banks will preside at the ground breaking for the new
Bishop Wycislo Center addition to St. Francis Xavier Cathedral at
5:30 p.m. Sunday, June 29. Auxiliary Bp. Robert Morneau will give
the blessing for the ceremony at the corner of Monroe and Doty
Streets, Green Bay.
The $1.95 million addition will be on the north side of the
Cathedral. It will include a space to gather, celebrate, socialize,
grieve, learn and prepare. It also will include a Diocese Museum to
display and preserve important church artifacts, documents and
vessels.
The center is named for Bp. Aloysius Wycislo, eighth bishop of
Green Bay (1968-83), in honor of his national and international
contributions to the church and civic community.
Bp. Wycislo, who recently celebrated his 95th birthday, was born
June 17, 1908, in Chicago. He was ordained in 1934 by Card. George
Mundelein. He served as a director of Catholic Relief Services
after World War II. He is believed to be the oldest surviving
bishop to have attended all sessions of the Second Vatican Council.
He continues to work with priests and laity in the diocese.
Contributions for the Bishop Wycislo Center can be sent to: The
Rector, 139 S. Madison St., Green Bay, WI 54301.
