Beginning this week, The Compass is running a six-part series explaining the new General Instruction of the Roman Missal, which will take effect Nov. 29-30 in all parishes of the Green Bay Diocese.

The series is being written by Diann Wimmer, diocesan director of Worship, and Anissa Melotte, consultant in the Worship office.

It will run on the Stewardship page (p. 10 this week [online here]). Wimmer begins with an introduction explaining that the document is the formal name for the introduction to the priest's large, red prayer book - the Sacramentary. This introduction includes instructions for priest and people as they celebrate the Mass.

The remainder of the series will deal with why the instructions were revised (Oct. 24), the Introductory Rites (Oct. 31), Liturgy of the Word (Nov. 5), Liturgy of the Eucharist (Nov. 12) and distribution and reception of Communion (Nov. 19).

The series will run with the logo that appears with this editorial. We hope the series will help readers understand the reasons for the revised General Instruction and how it affects their participation at Mass.
