A welcome return

Regular readers of The Compass had a surprise last week: The return of the Sunday Scripture column written so ably for many years by Fr. Richard Ver Bust, until his death in July.

We had planned to add another columnist to give background and explain the readings. But we were in no hurry, both because we had no one in mind and out of respect for Fr. Ver Bust.

Then, a reader asked if we'd considered running his old columns. Then another reader asked. Then a priest on our advisory board said he missed the columns. The entire board was asked their opinion and there were no objections. One member noted that, if Charles Shultz could do it with Peanuts, why not Fr. Ver Bust.

Next, we asked his two brothers, who had no objections.

All we had to do was pick a date. The start of the new liturgical year in Advent seemed fitting and now the columns are back.
