Remember your best Christmas present ever?For many children, toys and candy don't top holiday listBy Patricia Kasten Remember being a child on Christmas morning? Remember that most special gift? The one that stood out in your memory forever?
Each year, The Compass asks children, in fifth grade and under, to take part in our "Just for Kids" Christmas essay project. In this 16th year of the project, we asked them to write about Christmas presents - the very best present they ever got. We heard from 328 children - both individuals and students in Catholic schools and religious education programs across the diocese. In addition to the 21 classes that took part, we also had three all-school religious education programs use the essay project: Holy Cross in Mishicot; St. Michael's in Whitelaw and St. James in Cooperstown. New this year, was the response from four home-school programs. Below are some of the letters, edited for space. My favorite Christmas present I had was my fleece blanket. I got it last year. I think it is special because I got it from my old next door neighbor, Courtney, who is my best friend. She made it. I like it so much and sleep with it. -- Jenna Thelen, St. Mary Elementary, Menasha, age 7 My best gift is being able to play the piano. My piano teacher is the best Christmas gift ever, because she is giving her gift to me. -- Leah Szews, Catholic Seton Home School, Oshkosh, Grade 3 A Christmas present is special because it is given to us by the people who love us. My best present ever was being adopted. My Mom and Dad traveled to China to get me! I remember it because I see the pictures and I hear the stories a lot! -- Katherine Tessier, His Dwelling Place Home School, Oshkosh, Grade 3 My best Christmas gift ever is receiving Jesus, our Savior in the Holy Eucharist on Christmas morning. The Holy Eucharist is Jesus' sacrifice on the cross all over again, but without shedding any blood. We actually consume Jesus' Body and Blood! Such a beautiful thing could only be God's work! -- Hania Sitter, Kolbe Academy Home School, Oshkosh, Grade 5 My greatest Christmas present was my rabbit Flopsy. She came in a small cage covered with a red blanket. I was very surprised and happy when I saw her. I couldn't believe I had a pet which I always wanted to have. She's cute, I love her very much. -- Maria Sitter, Kolbe Academy Home School, Oshkosh, Grade 2 The best Christmas present I ever received is a rocking chair that is just my size. It is special because my Mom gave it to me. I put it in the corner by the bookcase. I like to rock in it while reading books. I will always love my rocking chair! -- Margaret Leitl, Home school, Oshkosh, Grade 3 The best gift I ever got is Kit. My eyes lighted up when Grandma gave her to me on Christmas. She looks exactly like me. She has blue eyes and blonde hair. My Mommy is Christine and Grandma says she was her best gift. Mommy was born on Christmas Eve. -- Teal Krause, Lakeside School, Oshkosh, Grade 4 A Christmas present is special because someone who loves you is giving it to you. My favorite present was an Easy Bake oven I got for Christmas. I had wanted it so bad I had dreams about it. We had a lot of fun making cookies and cakes. -- Nicole Bradley, St. Mary Parish, Oshkosh, age 7 A Christmas present is special because you get it on Jesus's birthday. The best present ever was a game boy advance because my sister and I can play with it together. I was very happy when I opened that present up. We played it all day. -- Evan Johannsen, St. Mary Parish, Oshkosh, age 8 Every Christmas we draw names. The person I pick is my Kris Kringle. It is a big secret. On Christmas I guess who has me. It was my aunt and uncle. I got a snowboard. It was my favorite thing because my two brothers and I like to play outside. -- Jared Luker, St. Mary Parish, Appleton, age 8 St. John Cantius School, Sobieski, Grade 4:My best present was a four wheeler. I got it when I was nine years old. I rode it the very next day. I gave people rides with me. I had a lot of fun. Once the four wheeler omost tipped over on a hill. I had the funniest times. -- Vicki McClannahan My best present was a bike from my dad with sunglasses. What made it so special was dad had to save up for the bike. Christmas is so special because Jesus was born. I remember it so well because I will never forget my dads smile it was so big. -- Tressa Jorgensen St. John Nepomucene School, Little Chute, grade 5 (Mr. West):When I was little I used my neighbor's bike because I didn't have one. Then a couple years after I got a Redline with only two wheels. A couple days after I got that bike my brother built a jump and I went off the jump and I fell. -- David Schepp My greatest gift was my dog Kyta. I picked her out of the litter of 8 puppies. She was shiny, black and very friendly and still us. Now she is bigger than me and weighs more than I do. She waits for me to throw her ball, then fetches it. -- Annie Kloehn My favorite gift of Christmas is my family. I have the best family because we all go to my grandparent's house and have fun together. They give me good presents. Thanks God for giving me my terrific family! -- Charlie Bruyette I think that the best gift that I got was my robot dog Pluto. I still have him and he works fine. Pluto walks, barks, shakes his tail, moves his head, and has a bone in his mouth. I like him because he's a nice dog. I love him! -- Olivia Wildenberg The greatest Christmas present I have ever received was a pillow from my Grandmother. It is the best gift because my Grandma took the time and effort to make it. It is nice to just cuddle up with it as if it is my Grandma. I received it at age six. -- Zach Dericks The best present I ever received was when we cleaned out our house and gave many of our toys to the Salvation Army. Knowing that someone who would enjoy my toys, would receive them was the best present ever. I was more thankful than ever before. -- Rebecca Van Handel The most special thing to me about Christmas was when I got my very first Precious Moment. I got it from my mom and it meant so much to me. I would always get jealous of my mom, because she has so many and I wanted to start a collection. -- Whitney Heenan My favorite gift I ever got for Christmas was a karaoke machine. Why I like it so much is I can express my feelings and emotions. But I can also have fun with my friends. I especially love the people who gave it to me. That would be my parents. -- Katelyn Marx I donated my hair to Locks of Love not long ago. I knew that my hair would go to someone in need. I knew that the person who received my hair would look at themselves in the mirror and smile. That person's smile is the best gift I ever received. -- Hayley Weyers My favorite Christmas present was my guinea pig, Carmela. I loved her very much because she was special to me. She was from my parents. The reason I remember her is because I got her and just loved her because she was beautiful. She is something I will never forget. -- Amee Lessor It was the year 2000. I had my Christmas list off to Santa. The thing I wanted most was a snowboard. So on Christmas morning I woke up and went through every present but no snowboard. I was disappointed. Then I went into the kitchen and there was my snowboard! -- Jarred Zak The best Christmas present I ever received was my dog, Chloe. She means a lot to me. She is always there for me. When I'm sad, she licks my tears. When I'm bored, she plays with me. She's my best friend, and I know I can always turn to her. -- Carly Vanden Heuvel My best Christmas gift I ever received was my blanket. It was my favorite gift because it is exactly like my very first blanket except bigger and puffier. I also like it because I left my baby blanket at a cabin in Michigan. So I never found it again. -- Sarah Van Deraa My favorite Christmas present was my B.B. gun. I don't shoot animals with it but I shoot at targets. I am pretty good at it. I always keep safe by wearing safety glasses. -- Rick Hammen My bb gun was the best Christmas present. I liked it because my Dad likes to hunt so I needed something to hunt with. I begged and I begged and I got it. Then when I went hunting with him I brought my bb gun and I shot a squirrel. -- Luke Kramer My favorite gift that I ever got for Christmas was my ticket to Florida. With that ticket I got to see Universal Studios, Sea world, and Disney's Magic Kingdom. It was a great experience and I hope to go back there some day because there is so much more to see. -- Dylan Kaufert For Christmas my cousin Richard was gone for his sister's birthday party. He was at the hospital because his shunts got weird. Unexpectedly he got better and came home. Everyone there was so surprised. I was so happy I ran and gave him a kiss. That was the best Christmas ever. -- Aubree Schepp My favorite Christmas present was a trip to Florida. It was special because my family and my aunt, uncle, and three cousins came. We stayed at the same hotel, and went to some Disney parks and beaches, too. It was very, very, fun! -- Brooke Weyers The Christmas after my mom and dad got divorced, I got an electric scooter. I thought it was really cool because my parents chipped in together, even though my parents were not married anymore. -- Connor De Bruin My favorite Christmas present is something you can't wrap. It's love, and being able to have a family to make memories and spend time with each Christmas. I like playing, opening presents, going to church, and laughing together. At least I think that's the best present ever. -- Stacy Gloudemanns This year for Christmas my mom, dad and I went to Heid's music store and got to pick a piano. It is a Kimbal piano with 88 keys. It is the best piano I've ever received. I have even signed a contract with mom and dad saying I will treat it nicely and practice every day for at least 30 minutes. -- Garret Harp Holy Rosary School, New Holstein, Grade 3I like Christmas because I get a present. The best present I ever got was Nintendo game cube. The present was special because it was so fun. I remember it so well because there are so many games that I play it all the time. That's why it was so special. -- Isaac Lintner I think Christmas is special because we don't have school and it's a time to be with your family. The best present I ever received was my Xbox and the games for it. The Xbox and the games where so special because it was my own. I remember it so well because that's the only toy I play with usually. -- Brady Schmitz The best Christmas present I ever got was PlayStation 2. I like it a lot because it has a lot of different games I can play. I never get bored. I have Nascar, football, and soccer games. I liked this present and I play with it very much at home. -- Shaun Mayr I think Christmas is special because all of my family is together. I think my best gift I received was my trampoline. That present was special because we always play on it and throw balls to the person on it. I remember it because many people including my family enjoy playing on the trampoline, that's why this is a special Christmas present. -- Tara Zipperer Christmas presents are fun because I never know what is going to be in them. I have a hard time waiting to open them to find out what is inside. The best gift I ever got was my Game Boy. It is special because it gives me something to do when I am bored and it is easy to take with me wherever I go. I remember it so well because my sister got one for her birthday and I really wanted one. -- Justin Frish I think Christmas is special because I get to be with my family and I like to decorate my house with lights and ribbons. I got a big tv and it was special to me because I never got anything like that before. I watch my tv a lot. -- Tate Winkler I think Christmas is special because my brother Adam comes home from college. That is what I love about Christmas. I think the best gift I received was my stuffed puppy because Santa Claus brought it to me and I like it. It is always in my bedroom. -- Josh Nisler I think Christmas is special because my uncle Al comes home from Texas. My best gift I received was my drum set. I remembered it so well because my cousin always used to play it when she came over here. -- Adam Schmitz I think Christmas is special because I feel close to Jesus. My knick-knack shelf, which came from my godmother, was my favorite Christmas gift. It is special because it holds all of the knick-knacks that my godmother gives me for each Christmas and every birthday. It also holds all of my First Communion knick-knacks. It is on my dresser, so I can look at it and remember all of my special times. -- Brianna Lisowe Holy Family School, Green Bay, Grade 5My best Christmas present I ever got was my bike. My grandma Lois got it for me. I like riding bikes. It is so special to me because I have wanted a new bike, and I asked a lot of people for Christmas for a new bike. I still like that bike. I love that bike! -- Laura Olsen I've received great Christmas presents, but if I pick my favorite it's my own television with D.V.D. player. My parents gave me this awesome gift. When my mom doesn't want the TV on, I can watch my own. My TV gives me time away from my brothers, I love it! -- Tatum Snyder The best Christmas present I ever got was my very own T.V. It was so fun to get, because I got to put it in my bedroom!!! I remember I could not fall asleep because I was so excited!! That same T.V. has been in my room ever since then. My T.V. is special to me because it helps me fall asleep at night. -- Cora Gryboski One present I'll never forget is my vanity. It was Christmas day. I saw lots of presents! I liked them all, but I wanted something like mom had. I saw something wrapped in bags. I opened it. It was a vanity! -- Samantha Pallini The best Christmas present I ever received is my big bike. "Santa" gave it to me and I'm really grateful. It's the best present because I snuck down from bed at 5:00 in the morning and saw it. It was big and red waiting for me to ride it. That's my best Christmas present of all. -- Chris Spaulding I have got a lot of Christmas gifts, but I would have to say my metal detector is the best gift I've received! I think this way because I got it from my godmother, and she is very nice to me. I'm very lucky to have a very nice godmother. -- Kevin Lois My best Christmas present I ever received was my stuffed animal named Simba. I got it from my Grandma. It is special to me because it was my first stuffed animal I ever got. I sleep with it every night. I love Simba a lot! -- Andrea Larsen I'll never forget the day I got my puppy. I got my puppy, Molly, in October. My mom and dad said it was an early Christmas gift. Molly is really special to me because she was my first puppy. She is a cute puppy and I love her a lot. -- Lauren Hopps The best Christmas present I ever received was my PlayStation 2. My parents gave it to me for Christmas. It is very special to me because I always wanted one. I play it a lot. The great thing about PlayStation 2 is its games are always changing. I love it. -- Ben Weigman The best Christmas present ever was my younger sister. God gave her to me. It's the best Christmas present because I can enjoy her company and we can both go to the park together. -- Cameron Defano The best Christmas present I ever received was my N64 on Christmas 1998 in Fargo, ND. "Santa" gave it to me. It is the best because it was the best game system around at the time. I got 2 games to go with it, Madden '98 and Yoshi's Story. -- Alex Fife I will never forget the bike that I received from my parents. It was blue with yellow and black trim. On Christmas when I woke up, I raced downstairs and saw a big object with a note with my name. It was a bike! And I still ride it today. -- Eric Perkovich The best Christmas present I've ever received was my PlayStation 2 and games. We got the PlayStation 2 from Santa Claus. When we got it, it was in a huge box. We got it two years ago. It's special to me because I've always wanted a game system. I play it every chance I get. -- Michael Grzelak The best Christmas present I ever received was a mini tv with VCR. The person who gave it to me was my Grandma. I like it because I can watch tv and movies without being distracted. I can play video games in private. I've always wanted one I got one. -- Spencer Shebesta The best Christmas present I ever received was my Green Bay Packer Bear with a Packer shirt on it. I got it when I was four from my mom that one special Christmas. It was so special to me because it was the only stuffed toy I got that year. That is why it is the best! -- Matt Hall Well, my favorite Christmas present I ever got was a hamster. Santa gave it to me. But I didn't get it until January because I only got a note. I really like my hamster because it's fun to play with. It's special to me because I built a friendship with her. -- Peter Urmann My favorite thing I got for Christmas was my PS2 (PlayStation 2). I got it from my step-dad. It is very special because I really like it and I use it all the time. -- Zach Tessier The best Christmas present I ever got was a lime green/purple beanbag chair. My parents ordered it specially from Flordia (they must really love me) It comes in really handy when I want to hold my dog because she's not allowed on furniture. And that's why it's only one of my favorite presents. -- Emelia Carpenter I'll never forget the Christmas when I received my pooh bear. I got it from santa. It's special to me cause I got it when I was three. When I got it was taller then me. It was one of my first stuff animals. -- Chelsea Cooney I got a MP3 player. When I got it I thought it was so cool! I got it from my dad. It is the best because it is little. You can put any songs you like on. It is so special to me because I got it from my dad. -- Nichole Olisinski There is a present that I can never forget. It is that fooseball table I got for Christmas from my father. This helps remember the fun we have together when I don't get to see him. I love it and it really helps. -- Allison Peters The best Christmas present I've ever received was a video game DVD player system. This was very hard to choose because I've got so many nice presents, but if I had to choose Xbox, my game system. My grandparents bought this for our family. That was one of my favorite presents ever. -- Peter Mortell The best Christmas present I ever received was the knowledge that my sister Maureen was going to be born soon. I was so excited and so was everyone else. We didn't know then she was going to be a boy or girl, but I silently prayed at night that she was going to be a girl. -- Katie Schick St. Gregory School, St. Nazianz, Grade 2My favorite Christmas present is my beanie baby because it had my birthstone for it's nose so I thought it was cool. It is my favorite thing. My grandma bought it for me. Now I put it in a safe place for a while. -- Evan Schueler My favorite present was when we went to Minnesota. It was special to me because it was an adventure. I remember it so well because that was the time I spent a lot of time with my family and they spent time with me. We loved it. -- Jared Patek My favorite Christmas present was when I got my picture that had bird eggs in the middle and was framed with beautiful painted feathers and a dark brown frame. I got it from my mom and dad. It was special because I like birds, nests, and bird eggs. It's on my wall. -- Natalie Schnell My favorite Christmas present was the American (Girl) doll. She is made of glass and looks just like with brown eyes, and brown hair. She is special because I got it from my grandma. It has a skirt and dress. Sometimes I get to order clothes, dresses, pajamas, shoes, and bibs. -- Paige Nenahlo My favorite present was my Twist and Shout multiplication. It was special to me because it helped me sometimes in Math. It's the best Christmas present I ever received in my life and maybe I might get a division one this Christmas. I hope I get one! -- Dana Emme The best Christmas present I ever received was a hamster. It is special because it was the last hamster at the store. I remember it so well because it was the smallest and could run real fast. -- Max Wagner The best Christmas present is not about toys. It's about love. It's special because if no one loved, the world would have wars and no peace on earth. I remember it so well because I got my Christmas present from God and Jesus and I know they love me very much. -- Alex Grube The best Christmas present I ever got was my pet dog Droopy. I named him Droopy because of his face. He's the most special present because he's the youngest dog I ever had. Droopy is three years old. I love him. -- Anton Simon My favorite thing I received was my dog Lidea. We found her in the laundry room. She was an indoor and outdoor dog. She barked when a person came. She is special because she sometimes comes in my room and sleeps with me. She is the best present ever. -- Joseph Egan My favorite Christmas present was a cat named Angel. Angel is special because my sister and I were sleeping and I woke up. It was laying on my stomach. I woke up my sister and she was excited. He was so special so we all decided to call him Angel. -- Montana Braun The best Christmas present I received was air hockey. I got it from my mom and dad. My sister and I play on it a lot. I'll remember it because my mom and dad will still have it when I get older. It is so special because it had really cool colors. -- Kayla Schneider My favorite Christmas present is my family. They're special to me because they love me. My family is so special to me because I'll always remember them. I'll remember them because they were with me for my whole life. -- Trevor Riesterer My best Christmas present I ever got was to go to California. It was special because I got to see my best cousin. I hadn't seen her in a long time. I got to sleep with my mom and sisters. We played on her trampoline and pingpong. Then in two days we went home. -- Marissa Broehm My favorite present I ever received was my boom box. It is special because my godparents gave it to me and I love it very much. I remember it because it is in my room. A Christmas present is special because it might be the best ever! -- Logan Christel My best Christmas present is my family time. It is special because it's fun and we spend a lot of time together. We also spend time when we go to our Aunt's house. When we go home, we spend time opening presents. I remember it because we did it last year. -- Shawn Schnell My favorite Christmas present was a stuffed animal horse. I got my stuffed animal horse from Kevin, my godfather. I love my stuffed animal horse. It is sitting up in my room. It is so special because all the other things were not very soft. -- Emily Biese My best Christmas present I ever received was Nellie, my dog. Christmas presents are so special because the present you might get, you can talk to. Nellie is so special because I always wanted a dog and I can talk to her. I won't be lonely or sad anymore. -- Alyx Waniger St. Francis de Sales Elementary School, Manitowoc, Grade 2AA special Christmas present that I want is indoor monkey bars. You can have them in your house. I got a special Christmas present. It was a CD player and I got a CD with it. I got my CD and CD player from my Aunt Trisia. I listen to it when we go camping and at home. -- Alexandra Luedke A special Christmas present is a H2 Hummer remote control car. What makes it special is because it is from God. When I get it I will play with it. I will share it with my friends. -- Joel Jens A special Christmas present is something that is surprising for you!
What makes it special is if you got it from a special person like your
godparents. What made it special because its from them. They got me some Bay
blades. I spin them. The present I got was a basketball hoop. The person who gave it to me was Santa Claus. The basketball hoop was the thing I wanted the most out of all the things on my Christmas list on that Christmas. -- Alex Deets A special Christmas present for me is a Game Boy. It is a hand held video game. I got a snow and water tube. It can go on the water and on the snow. -- Noah Clayton A special Christmas present is an old doll. What makes it special because I got it from my great grandpa. I play with the doll so much it has many rips and tears from playing with it. -- Elizabeth Kolanczyk A special Christmas present was a crib. It is special because it was a crib for my doll. It was something I always wanted. -- Laura Platteter A special Christmas present is my twin doll. I got it from my dad. I also got a matching dress. I got it after Christmas. But the sad thing about it is I have to send it back in because my dog chewed it's hand off and I got pretty sad. They will fix it and send it back -- Michaela Schmidt My favorite Christmas present was indoor monkey bars. I can play with it all the time. My mom and dad gave it to me and my sister. I play with it almost every day. My dad and his friend made it. -- Stephanie Winans My special Christmas present is a motor scooter. You can ride it down the block or you can ride it on the driveway. I would love to get this present. Either my mom or Santa Claus could bring me this present. -- Jordan Mills A special Christmas present that I got was a snow globe because it has a fisher man in it. I keep it at the cottage. I like to look at it. -- Max Foster I once got a Nascar track for Christmas one year. I got it from my Godmother. It was a surprise. I used to play with it but now both of the cars are broken. -- Vincent Schad I once got a scarf for Christmas. It was a surprise. It was special because my Aunt made it. She is really good at knitting. We call her my aunt but she is really my Grandma's sister. The colors of the scarf are purple and red, kind of like a rainbow. I wear the scarf to school. -- Maddie Braun A special Christmas present is my Mom is going to have new babies. What makes it special is because I know my Mom is going to have twin babies. Did you ever get a special present? Yes, I got a new sister and brother that are 4 years old. My present is special because nobody else gets it. -- Lauren Mihalakakos A special Christmas present that I want is a lizard because they're good friends and good pets. You can teach them tricks and its fun to let them crawl on you. I got a special present last year. It was LEGOs Harry Potter. My present was special because my moms brother gave it to me. -- Anthony Marchlewski St. John School, Little Chute, Grade 5 (sr. Christine)My favorite Christmas gift that I ever got was from my neighbors. I had just moved in the neighborhood, and I didn't know anybody. They welcomed me to play with them, building forts, and having snowball fights. They made me feel included. I will never forget that gift of friendship. -- Ashley Coenen My favorite Christmas gift ever would be when my grandma got better. My grandma has had a lot of surgeries in her life, but the one that I will always remember was the one she had last year around this time. I believe that God helped my grandma get better. Ever since that surgery just about everyone in my family has believed and will continue to believe in God and God's miracles. -- Rachel Maley My best present for Christmas was when I was in Girl Scouts. We went on a limousine bus to see all the Christmas lights, and we visited Parkside Care Center. Each of us made cards for the residents. When we got there a lady showed us around. We gave the older people our cards and they really appreciated them. All the residents smiled and said "Thanks." Some were so happy that they cried. After that everyone at Parkside and the Girl Scouts were happy! This is a Christmas I'll never forget. -- Melissa Peerenboom My favorite Christmas present is getting to see my brother, Mike, who lives in Minnesota. I really miss him when he doesn't come home for awhile. I love to see all my family at once and at Christmas time that's exactly what I receive. -- Stephani Van Groll The best Christmas gift that I ever received was a teddybear. It is from my Grandma and Grandpa Peerenboom. This teddybear is special to me because almost a year later my Grandpa died. That was the last Christmas gift that he ever gave me. Now you know why the teddybear is special to me. -- Emily Peerenboom The best Christmas present I have ever gotten was the expression on the faces of my grandma and grandpa when I gave them a hand made card. The card had a cut out Christmas tree with a star on it. They loved the card and I was happy. -- Charlie Albers When my sister came home from the hospital I thought she was just a loud baby. But then, when she got older she became a great sister to me. We still fight a lot, but I know that when we grow up we will be best friends. That is why she is the best Christmas present I ever got. -- Christa Vander Pas The best Christmas gift I ever got was love. When Jesus was born he only got three presents for his whole life! The only other thing he got was love. You don't need all those Game Boys and Video Games. All you need is love. Heck! I get it every day! I'm such a lucky person. So, yes, I think live is the most important gift. -- Kadie Smith The greatest Christmas gift I ever got was being protected and loved by my family and The Holy Family. They were there through my toughest times. When I was scared they were there, when I was hurt they were there. I love them more than anything else. -- Taylor Schroeder On Christmas three years ago my Grandma was very sick. She died on New
Years Eve. We were sad to say good-bye to her, but we know that she was up in
heaven with Jesus and most of all she wasn't in pain anymore. My best Christmas gift was my grandma getting better for Christmas. She was able to spend Christmas with us, but she died in January of stomach cancer. -- Ross Kenseth The best Christmas gift is my family. I have cousins that live in all different states, and when they come home I get excited because I haven't seen them for years. I really like my family because there're all kind and funny. Five of my cousins live in Tennessee and one of them was just born. When he comes home for Christmas that will be a wonderful gift. You have to realize that toys and presents aren't always the best gifts.
