Churches to join in Rolling Thunder
Rally in Milwaukee to focus on prison, immigration, education issues
JOSHUA (Justice Organizations Sharing Hope & United for Action) congregations, including parish groups from the Green Bay Diocese, are preparing to take part in Rolling Thunder, 2 to 4 p.m., Sept. 18 at U.S. Cellular Arena in Milwaukee.
People of faith from throughout Wisconsin will gather with political candidates and a diverse array of sponsoring organizations including the Racine Taxpayer Association, M & I Bank, and Wisconsin Citizen Action. One of 27 major public gatherings in cities across the country, Rolling Thunder in Milwaukee is billed as "An Interfaith Celebration for Justice," and will include a 1,000-voice combined choir and testimonials about lives impacted by issues involving prison, immigration and education reform. Candidates from both major parties will speak on these issues.
"There is a hunger in this community, and throughout the country, to feel connected and to feel empowered," said Rev. Jim Hicks, JOSHUA's Clergy Caucus Leader. "By working collectively with public officials and community organizations, people of faith can accomplish far more than any one congregation alone, to make real lasting improvements in our community and
state."
The registration deadline for Rolling Thunder is Sept. 7. To register or for more information, call John Delwiche at (92)432-7595 or Joan Turner at (920)469-3407. Charter buses will pick up passengers at designated sites at 10 a.m. and converge at St. Matthew Church in Green Bay at 11 a.m. Buses will return by 6:30 p.m.
A Rolling Thunder choir rehearsal is scheduled for 2 to 3:30 p.m. on Sept. 11 at Old St. Joe's Church on the St. Norbert College campus in De Pere. To sing in the choir, call Colleen Dunkel at (920)406-1120 or Dan Robinson at (920)347-0828.
