Put stewardship into action

Habitat for Humanity needs helping hands

By Tony Staley
Compass Editor

Catholics in the Green Bay area have a great opportunity to help improve the community, assist a family and practice stewardship in the process.

The Affordable Housing Institute of the Catholic Foundation for the Diocese of Green Bay is partnering with Greater Green Bay Habitat for Humanity to build a home for a family of nine at 326 S. Jackson St., Green Bay.

The Long Family Catholic Build project involves building a five-bedroom, two-bathroom, 1,600-square-foot, two-story house for a family of nine. The family also will help build the house - their "sweat-equity" - and then pay off the mortgage.

Nativity, Prince of Peace, Resurrection, St. Matthew, St. Norbert College and St. Willebrord parishes have pledged volunteers for the build, as have St. Mary's Hospital Medical Center and the De Pere Knights of Columbus.

But there's room for more volunteers on build days - Thursdays and Saturdays - through Dec. 7. To sign up, phone Janna Zimmerman at (920)593-3921. It's part of the stewardship of service - plus each day's build starts with a short prayer.
