Area Catholics Gathering this weekend at SNC

2,000 people expected

Catholics from Wisconsin and neighboring states will be able to hear nationally recognized speakers, build professional skills and deepen their faith this weekend at The Gathering.

Nearly 2,000 people are expected to attend, making it the Green Bay Diocese's largest event. More than 125 speakers will present several hundred workshops in sessions Oct. 6-7 at St. Norbert College in De Pere.

Among them are eight nationally known figures:

Dr. Alem Asres, director of college diversity and affirmative action at Northeast Wisconsin Technical College, Green Bay. He lectures on multiculturalism and cultural differences for government, industry, and private and public colleges. His workshops are "Life Is So Good If We Just Respect Each Other and Respect Life," and "The Danger of Assumption in Cross-Cultural Communication."

• Dr. Michael Carotta, who has worked more than 30 years on the spirituality of adolescents. He is the national catechetical consultant for Harcourt Religion Publishers and a teacher at three Catholic colleges. His workshops are "Teaching for Discipleship: The Call, The Challenge, The Difference," and "The Story: Imagination and Your Adolescents."

Daniel Driscoll, who for 20 years has worked on peace and justice issues with parishes, schools and dioceses. He heads a Montessori school in South Bend, Ind., and presents the JustFaith Introductory Workshop throughout the country. His workshops are "Living in Right Relationship: Scriptural and Theological Roots of Catholic Social Teaching," "Spirituality of Fatherhood" and "JustFaith: Developing a Passion and Thirst for Justice."

• Dr. Zeni Fox, a professor at Immaculate Conception Seminary, Seton Hall University in South Orange, N.J., and the author of a book on lay ministry in the church. Her workshops are "The Church in Pilgrimage," and "Co-Workers in the Vineyard of the Lord: The Evolution of a Document."

• Dr. Maureen Gallagher, who has graduate degrees in education, theology and art history. She worked 16 years for Archdiocese of Milwaukee and is the director of the Waukesha Catholic School System and a consultant. Her workshop is "Catechesis: Head, Heart and Sparkle."

• Dr. Thomas Guskey, a noted educator, a prolific author and a professor at the University of Kentucky in Lexington. His workshops are "Improving Student Learning with Standards and Assessment," and "Grading Policies and Practices That Work."

• Maureen Kelly, who is an internationally known catechist, lecturer and author. Her workshop is "Evangelization and Catechesis in a Post-Modern World."

Janèt Sullivan Whitaker, a composer with Oregon Catholic Press and director of music and liturgy at Corpus Christi Parish in Piedmont, Calif. Her workshops are "Weaving Diversity Into Music," "Ministry as Good Stewardship," "Ministry as Hospitality" and "Singing the Psalms."

Bp. David Zubik will open The Gathering at 8:45 a.m. Friday with Mass in Schuldes Sports Center. Exposition of the Eucharist will follow at 10:10 a.m. in Old St. Joseph Church and will continue until closing prayer at 3:25 p.m.

Four sessions of sectional workshops will follow Mass.

On Saturday, Exposition of the Eucharist will begin at 8:15 a.m. in Old St. Joseph Church. Bp. Zubik will lead morning prayer at 8:45 a.m. in Walter Theatre. Five sessions of sectional workshops will follow. The final event will be the closing of Eucharistic Exposition at 4:05 p.m.
