Focusing on social teachings
Advent series responds to reader requests
By Tony Staley

The Compass is midway through a five-part Advent series on Catholic social teaching for Everyday People, Everyday Faith. As was the case with our Lenten series on prayer, this Everyday People, Everyday Faith is a joint effort of The Compass and the diocesan departments of Catholic Charities, Education, Evangelization & Worship and Stewardship & Pastoral Services.
We also asked people in parishes and agencies to write articles for the series. Plus, the series draws weekly from an excellent series of pamphlets on Catholic social teaching prepared by the Catholic Conference of Kentucky, which we are reprinting with their permission.
How did we choose to do a series on Catholic social teaching? Truth be told, we didn't. Instead, we polled readers last year during the Easter season. We asked if they liked Everyday People, Everyday Faith. The resounding answer was "Yes." We asked if they would like a series for Advent and if so, on what? The overwhelming responses were "Yes" and "Catholic social teaching."
This series is the result. We are now working on a new series for Lent around the theme of reconciliation.
As always, we welcome your comments.
