It's all about the gift.

Christmas is the feast of gifts because it celebrates when we received the most important gift: God's own Son coming into the world as a human being like us. God came to live with us. What a gift.

Our own gifts, especially at Christmas, mirror God's gift of love.

Each year, as Christmas nears, The Compass asks children, in fifth grade and under, to participate in our "Just for Kids" Christmas essay project. Every year, individual children, as well as students in Catholic school classes and religious education programs around the diocese, send in essays. Their perspectives add to our celebration of the Incarnation.

This year, our 19th annual "Just for Kids" asked children to write about just one gift:

If you could give only one Christmas gift this year -- to just one person -- what would it be? Who would get it, and why?

We heard from 321 children -- both individuals and students in 27 different school classes or religious education programs across the diocese.

Not surprisingly, family members as a group were most often chosen for gifts by the children, receiving more than half the choices (167). Moms, of course, were most often designated to receive gifts (51), with siblings right behind (40). However, the largest single group to be named to receive "the only gift" were friends (68). And, if you add in cousins -- and other family members -- who were primarily named first as friends, the number approaches a third of the respondents.

Below are all of the children's responses.

(Listed first are individual letters that were submitted, followed by those of students in various class settings.)

I would give my mom a big hug and a kiss and mark some crosses on her forehead. She would share my gift of love with everybody and they would spread it all around the world. Then there would be more love and peace around the world! -- Joseph Hable, Oshkosh, age 6, Sacred Heart Parish.

I would give Meghan a Bratz doll because she likes them, and she has always wanted one for Christmas. I would give it to Meghan because she is kind, and she liked a lot of the same things as me, and we went to the same school until first grade. I have known her since we were babies, and now we are best friends. -- Sarah Anguilli, Appleton, age 7, Holy Spirit Parish, Kimberly.

I would like to give Grandpa Kacourek a picture of Grandma. Grandma died and is in Heaven. Grandpa misses her. I think a picture of Grandma would make Grandpa happy. Grandma always gave me cookies when I went to her house. I miss my Grandma, too. I also miss my Grandpa Spatchek who died. He fed the fish with me and gave me rides on the tractor and four-wheeler. I think Grandma Spatchek would like a toy John Deere tractor to remember Grandpa on the farm. -- Andy Spatchek, Green Bay.

I would give a necklace with a heart on it. I would give it to Devon's mom because it would be a heart that would open up and have a picture of Devon in it. It would remind her of him. -- Elliott Luker, grade 2, St. Mary School, Greenville.

I would give the gift of time by ringing bells for the Salvation Army. This gift is the best gift I could give because it can't be gotten back once I have given it. -- Nicholas Rakevs, age 10, grade 4, Holy Cross School, Bay Settlement.

I would give Mrs. Brunner a statue of Mickey Mouse for a lawn ornament. In his hand would be a snow globe. Inside the snow globe would be Disney World. The globe would light up so you could see the path. You could also switch to many colors. -- Ashley E.

I would give Jared a ticket to Wrestle Mania because then for Christmas he could see all the wrestlers. He can get autographs so the autographs will always remind him of me. He could also get some souvenirs while he was there. -- Nick

I would give my brother an Xbox 360 because he really wants one and he is begging for one. He would also have to share it with me. -- Will D.

I could give my friend Michael a Madden 2036 game. Michael would be happy because he loves video games and plays my Madden 2006. The bad thing about giving him that is I would have to wait 30 years because it's not invented yet. -- Riley K.

I would give my gift to my dad because he is always there for me whenever I need him. I would give him a pair of D Wades (shoes). My dad really deserves it because he is the best dad in the whole entire universe. I love you Dad. -- Marcus J.

I would give a present to Ashley. I would give her a box of cookies, because it symbolizes our friendship. It also symbolizes that we stick together and that we stand up for each other. -- Vaughan

I would give Maddie a Shetland pony because she loves animals and she doesn't have a pony or a horse. She is one of my trustworthy friends. I would give her the cutest one in the world. I hope she would treat it with love and care. -- Samantha

I would give my grandpa new lungs. I think he needs them for when it is hot. I think new lungs would be a good Christmas present. He has always given me good Christmas presents and I still have all of them. That's what I want to give him. -- Ciera W.

It would be to my mom. I would give her a certificate for an all day spa treatment and a special meal with her family. I would give this to her because she's special in my heart. -- Rachel

If I would give it to my friend Kasey. The present I would give her is a horse. She loves horses and would really appreciate it. Kasey would be happy with a horse and I would love to make her happy. -- Sarah B.

I would give it to my brother, Kevin. I would give him a new red Honda car. I would give him a car because he has always wanted a car. He gets his temps December 1st (that's all he talk's about.) -- Allison

I would give my present to my mom and it would be a brand new car, because she takes care of when I am sick, and feeds me when I am hungry. -- Brennan

I would give my Mom an Escalade (SUV) because then she has more room for groceries. We would also be less cramped on trips. It also has a good TV in it, so we can watch movies. Plus it is our dream car and that is what I would give. -- Nicholas Z.

I would give my grandpa a new boat. I would give him a 23-foot BAJA that goes 70 mph although he has a 25-foot BAJA that goes 50 mph. He wants a new boat so that it rides smoother because he rides on Lake Winnebago and there are big waves. -- Conner O.

Allie, because she is nice and a wonderful friend. It would be a Cocker Spaniel dog because Allie has always wanted a dog but her mom doesn't really know if they should get one or not. -- Britt Marie

Sami. I would give her a Shetland pony. Because she wants one and because they are so cute. Sami because she is a great friend. Shetland ponies are so cute! I'll try to get everything for it. I think she will like it! I hope she has a great Christmas! -- Maddie

I would get a house for my dad who lives in an apartment. He got divorced because him and my mom didn't get along. Then Chase, Chandler, and I would have a yard to play in and Sherry would have a house too. -- Mason D.

I would give a psp (video game) to my cousin Taylor so he wouldn't have to borrow his brothers. He could bring it on holidays when we see him. Another reason why I would give it to him is because we have a lot in common. -- Austin

I would give an Xbox 360 to my friend Matt, because he was very nice to me when I had my disease. He is my neighbor so he always did stuff with me. He is very nice and very athletic so he plays football and basketball with me. -- Thomas Hatchell

Christmas... Christmas... Christmas... What should I give to the orphanage? I can only give one gift, and I don't know what to give them. I could them money, but that wouldn't be straight from the heart. I could give them a quilt but that's not big enough for everybody. I know! I could give them love just like their parents would! -- Alex Halbach

For Christmas I would give my gift to a poor girl who's my age in Africa. My gift would be a trip to my house. My aunt went to Africa and said a lot of people were poor. So, for my gift I would invite her to my house, and we would have a Christmas party! -- Anna Hopfensperger

I am going to give my gift to Jesus. It's going to be trying to live the Beatitudes. Jesus taught us to live them, and sometimes I don't do that. That's my gift, and I'll try to give that gift to Jesus. -- Matt Lamers

I would give the Camp Randall Stadium to Mr. Wydeven. The reason is he loves the Wisconsin Badgers so much! He goes to all the home games on Saturdays. He also decorated his classroom with a lot of Badger stuff. -- Curtis Rollo

It would be kindness to my sister. I would do that because sometimes she gets left out and wants to play with me. I would do that by including her when I'm playing with someone. -- McKayla Geiser

I would pick my dad for one Christmas gift. He is at work most of the time for my family. I would give him two 50 yard line tickets to go with me so we can finally spend time together at a Packer game. -- Ben Ruffing

I would give my one Christmas gift to Father Bob, who is a priest in the Philippines. I would give him a chair, because they do not have anything to sit on. Where they live, they are very poor. They cannot buy chairs. That's what I would give to Father Bob. -- Joe Huss

If I could only give one gift for Christmas, I would give to my family everlasting love. This would give them joy and happiness for a long time. God would come into our lives and bless us. We could then spread this love to others in need throughout the world. We would help make the world a better place! -- Dallas Janssen

If I gave a gift to someone it would be my neighbor. I would help her shovel snow because she is an older woman, and she doesn't walk very well. I would also shovel snow for her because if she works too hard, she has to be put on an oxygen tank. -- Hannah DuPrey

If I would give one Christmas gift, I would give it to my grandfather. I would give him a BIG HUG. The reason why I would give him a hug is because when he gives me a hug it makes me feel happy. I think I would give him a hug back so he feels happy too. -- Kendra Leon

Because of enrollment my mom lost her job as a teacher at my school. She had to move to a different school, and now she's a sub. I would give my mom her job back at any school to make my mom happy. -- Tanner Van De Hey

I would give love to my grandma, because she has been through so many surgeries: (hip and knee in the same year!!) She has given so much love to me. I think I should give love back. That's the gift I would give for Christmas. -- Claire Schmidt

The person I would give the gift, is my 93 year old Grandpa, because he is so nice to me. The gift I would give him is wood, since he is a wood carver. The reason I am giving this gift to him is so that he can enjoy what he does for the rest of his life. -- Andrew DeGroot

My gift would be for my grandma, because she lives alone. So the gift for this Christmas is a new house because her house is very old. -- Ryan Veldman

The gift I would give would be hope, and love for my sister Amber, because she is getting married on September 29 of 2007. I can't wait to be in her wedding! I am going to be one of the bridesmaids. My other sister is going to be the flower girl. My brother is going to be a groomsman. My Aunt Cindy is going to be the maid of honor. My dad and my stepdad are going to be walking my sister down the aisle. I can't wait! -- Aubree Calmes

The gift I would give on Christmas would be a swimming pool. I would give it to my friend Ryan, because he gets hot very easy. In gym, I can hear him breathing heavily, and I can almost hear his heart beat. He is fast, but he gets slower and slower as he runs. -- Henry Schuh

If I had one gift to give, I would give Sparrow, my chinchilla, to my brother, Aiden. He loves Sparrow so much and he is always petting her. When she is in her toy ball to run, Aiden takes Sparrow to my room and feeds her. He is always in my room holding her. I would definitely give my chinchilla to Aiden. -- Kelsey Trinkner

Once I had a gift. It was there for a long time. I got it for Mr. Wydeven, my teacher. It is a Badger rug. It has a Badger print on it. I like it, but it takes too much space in my room. That is all. -- Andrea Gocker

If I could give one Christmas gift it would be a shed with baby Jesus, Mary, Joseph, Holy Spirit, and The Angels. I would give it to Mrs. Orchekowski, because she is nice to be with. She plans really fun things. Mrs. O is very holy to me. -- Karalyn Christel

I would give David a train for a Christmas gift, because he has a train collection. David is cool and his house looks like a castle. He came to one of our family parties and we played soccer. It was fun! -- Allyson Gill

I'd give food to the animal shelter. Animals need food to survive. The animal shelter is a place where there are lost animals. -- Faith Gauthier

I would give a horse to my 3 yr. old brother. All he thinks about is horses. He has every model and stuffed animal. He deserves it. -- Allie VanPay

I would give a fleece blanket to the Linus Foundation. The Linus Foundation is where kids in the hospital get a blanket to comfort them. That would be my gift this Christmas, because I am very lucky to be healthy. -- Sarah

Only one gift! Wow! That's pretty weird: The true meaning of Christmas is giving. Anyway, I would try to give peace to the world. I think the world would be a lot less violent. Kids could play in their yards without having parents keeping a sharp eye on them. -- Heidi

I'd give a Golden bracelet that says "Best Parents" to my parents. They give me good presents. They are my parents and I love them and they know me really good. -- Eva

I would give the Gonnering family a cure for Blake because they are so busy from running to the hospital and watching Lindsy who is in my class and her older sister Kathy who has the flu. I just want them all to get a break and go back to normal. Blake has gone through so much since he got a tumor and had to have surgery. After that, he has never really been the same. Christmas would be very special to me and my family if I could give my dad the gift of healing. Then he would not have to suffer with his kidney and leg. He has had a lot of surgeries on them. I want him to be well again. -- Marci Lessor

It would go to a poor person. The gift would be food, money and clothes. They would have a happier Christmas, because they would know they would have a chance to find a job and to earn a education. -- Austin Gloudemans

It would be money for kids to go to school. Because, some kids can't afford uniforms, or books. I would give money to a kid, because it is sad to see a child who can't go to school, because they have no money. -- Kennedy Strick

If I had to choose, I would choose my brother, Marty, because he is very nice and I love him. I would get him a PlayStation2 game, Madden NFL 2007. If I couldn't get him that, then I would get him a cool basketball. -- Morgan LeNoble

If I could only give one gift to one person, I would give them a big teddy bear. So they could love it and when they get mad show love to it. I would give it to Jordan Janssen. He is a good friend. And because we care for each other. -- Taylor Hermes

I'm going to give that present to my mom, because she does a lot of work for my family. I would give her a candle and a recipe book, because she likes candles and she is a good cook. -- Kate Hammen
