Clarifying what's going on

Last week the Green Bay Diocese began accepting applications for the position of editor of The Compass.

Just to clarify things and to stop speculation or rumors, I am going to retire. The decision was entirely mine, made after a great deal of prayer and consultation with my wife, Jackie, our spiritual director, and some family and friends.

After 34 years at weekly newspapers, including 31 years in Catholic journalism and 17½ years at The Compass, it was time.

I plan to spend more time traveling with Jackie and to concentrate on writing and editing without the pressures of putting together a weekly newspaper, supervising a staff and attending meetings. We will stay in Green Bay, which we thoroughly enjoy.

The plan is for me to continue as editor until my successor is in place, probably in early spring.

For now, I thank all of you for this great experience. I'm sure I'll have more to say later.
