Looking ahead
Upcoming CD audio of the New Testament will make a great present for Christmas

Even though the heat of summer is upon us, it's not too early to think about Christmas presents. Or perhaps, more appropriately, Thanksgiving presents.
Coming to stores this October is a 25-hour, 20-CD audio of the New Testament from Thomas Nelson, Inc., in association with Falcon Pictures Group.
Overflowing with Hollywood talent and audio theater, The Word of Promise, New Testament Audio Bible ($49.99), is the brainchild of Carl Amari, CEO of Falcon. Co-producer is Raymond Arroyo of EWTN. While not based on a Catholic version of scriptures, but the New King James Bible, the project still promises to be a delight for the ears, and the soul.
The CDs contain the talents of stars such as vocalist Michael W. Smith, composer Stefano Mainetti (Abba Pater), and actors Michael York, Marisa Tomei, Luke Perry, Louis Gossett Jr. James Caviezel, of The Passion of the Christ, will portray Jesus.
Quoted in the April 18 LA Times, Amari said he believes the project will be a success because "there's a hunger for things that speaks to a spiritual life." If the project is well received, Amari plans a 60-CD audio of the Old Testament and has already signed Richard Dreyfuss as Moses.
In a society that weaves a variety of media into our information experience, an audio Bible may not be new. However, audiences for most audio Bibles have traditionally been those who listen as they drive between retirement destinations or because of failing vision. With this combination of highly recognized stars and composers, as well as state-of-the-art sound effects, Amari might just capture the attention of a younger set more inclined to MP3s and streaming audio. (Something a growing number of Catholic web sites offer.)
That should be something to inspire gratitude at many levels.
