MANITOWOC -- Silver Lake College has had in place a crisis protocol and communications plan for nearly three decades, according to Doug Mrotek, vice president for College Advancement.

"It was revisited again last spring after the Virginia Tech tragedy to make sure we are still as prepared as we intend to be," he said.

Serving on the college's Safety Committee is a cross section of the college community that includes students and staff, said Mrotek.

Enrollment at Silver Lake is about 1,000 students. The school, sponsored by the Franciscan Sisters of Christian Charity, has no student housing on campus.

"We lease units at a housing facility adjacent to the campus and in downtown Manitowoc ... as demand for student housing outpaced supply," said Mrotek. "We have published procedures for those facilities and the campus proper for accidents of all kinds, natural catastrophes (such as weather), incidents such as or involving intruders or signaling behaviors for anyone on campus, alerting for systems malfunctions and the like."

These procedures are also communicated at employee and student orientations and reinforced at other appropriate times, said Mrotek.
