This past weekend I had the distinct pleasure to preach a retreat at our wonderful diocesan retreat house, Holy Name Retreat House on Chambers Island, just off the shore from Fish Creek in Door County.
This year the retreat house is celebrating 60 years of hosting retreats and I realized what a special gift this place is — not only in natural beauty and in ideal surroundings for retreat, but I recognized this as truly a holy place where many people experience the Lord and spiritual realities, perhaps for the first time. This holy place provides a respite on the journey of life for weary travelers. It is a place to experience the traces of God's presence in the book of nature. God also manifests his presence in those he brings together for a weekend or retreat experience, seeking to grow closer to Christ and to the church.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
This fall and throughout the coming year everyone in the Diocese of Green Bay is invited to participate in a Diocesan Visioning Process that will help the Church of Green Bay to reflect on its strengths, set priorities and create new plans for our future. In your parish bulletins your pastor has explained part of the planning process that will invite all of us all to look at what we truly appreciate about our parish, our diocese and what we think might still need some improvement.

I am pleased to present to you this year's annual report from Catholic Charities here in the Diocese of Green Bay. (See special section inside print edition.) I am reminded of Pope Benedict XVI's words in his encyclical, Deus Caritas Est (God is Love) that "the church's deepest nature is expressed in her threefold responsibility of proclaiming the word of God, celebrating the sacraments and exercising the ministry of charity."
Surely the work of Catholic Charities over the past 92 years has exemplified the ministry of charity in serving the needs of countless individuals here in our diocese. We join with them and the national Catholic Charities programs in their centennial year of service to God's poor and disenfranchised.

"Bishop, will you pray for ...?" As I travel about the Diocese of Green Bay, frequently people ask me to pray for a particular intention that is weighing on their heart. It is a privilege for me to remember people and their intentions in prayer. I also look upon this intercessory prayer as an important part of my ministry. In fact, prayer for the Christian faithful is one of the obligations that we bishops, priests and deacons assume on our ordination day.
