Bishop Ricken calls on area Catholics to fight HHS ruling on religious liberty PDF Print E-mail

GREEN BAY — In solidarity with fellow bishops throughout the United States, Bishop David L. Ricken today released a letter to be read at all Masses this weekend that calls on Catholics to renew opposition to a recent Obama administration decision that, he said, "negatively impacts the church in the United State directly, and that strikes at the fundamental right to religious liberty for all citizens of any faith."

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced last week that almost all employers, including Catholic employers, will be forced to offer their employees health coverage that includes sterilization, abortion-inducing drugs, and contraception, all of which are in direct violation of Catholic teachings.

"This ruling sets a very dangerous precedent. We are no longer going down the slippery slope of invasion of individual conscience," said Bishop Ricken. "We are now falling off the cliff."

"This ruling sets a very dangerous precedent. We are no longer going
down the slippery slope of invasion of individual conscience. We are now falling off the cliff."
— Bishop David Ricken

"As staunch advocates for the poor and vulnerable in our society, and as adherents to the long-standing principles of Catholic social teaching, this country's bishops have been strong and vocal supporters of universal access to health care. This unconscionable decision by the HHS is a setback to nearly a half century of tireless advocacy in this arena," added Ricken.

In his letter to the more than 345,000 Catholics in the 16 counties of northeast Wisconsin, Bishop Ricken steadfastly reinforced his commitment to Catholic values and warned that if the rule is not overturned that Catholic health care organizations, schools, and other Catholic entities would be compelled either to violate their consciences, or to drop health coverage for their employees, and suffer the legal penalties for doing so.

"We cannot – and will not – comply with this unjust law," said Bishop Ricken. "People of faith cannot be made second class citizens. We are already joined by our brothers and sisters of all faiths and many others of good will in this important effort to regain our religious freedom. The church has always been able to count on the faithful to stand up and protect her sacred rights and duties. I hope and trust she can count on this generation of Catholics to do the same."

Cardinal-designate Timothy Dolan, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), and former archbishop for the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, sharply criticized the HHS decision. "Never before has the federal government forced individuals and organizations to go out into the marketplace and buy a product that violates their conscience. This shouldn't happen in a land where free exercise of religion ranks first in the Bill of Rights," he said.

Thank you Bishop Ricken for taking such a clear, courageous and correct stance against this assault against religious liberty.

We are blessed to have a shepherd such as yourself.

Thank you for being our leader and standing up for what is right. I believe that the break down of the family is the route of most major problems. This assualt is if grave concern. I am willing to do what I can as a lay person. Please keep me informed.

It is good and right that our bishops stand up against this assault on religious freedom. However, it may have come too late. Many bishops were supportive and still are, of Universal Healthcare as it was being drafted the last four years. It seems they have been and are too trusting in the administration that religious rights would be respected. Knowing the stand and history of this current president this was naive indeed. It is my hope that the Catholics sitting in the pews will fight this and show it in the next election. We must also realize that this problem did not occur overnight. After the huge dissent against Humanae Vitae over the past forty years, many Catholics may embrace the culture of death either intentionally or through ignorance by using contraception and sterilzation themselves. Many priests and bishops have been silent in teaching the truth concerning artificial contraception and sterilization. Many Catholics who did know the truth ignored it and followed "their own consciences." As a result, today there may be only a minority of Catholics who embrace the entire Culture of Life through their openness to life and use of NFP. Considering this, there may not be a Catholic Outrage to this assault on religion when many in the pews are using contraception and sterilization. We are reaping what was sown. God help us!

Thank you, Bishop Ricken! I hope and pray that many Catholics and non-Catholics will cause a change in this most unjust bill. The media, of course, will likely continue to serve the liberal agenda so radically that it will be difficult to find the voices of the true numbers of people who oppose such unjust legislation.

In Agreement!

You're not only in solidarity with fellow Bishops, but with all Bible believing Christians. I wish more pastors would take a stand and be so vocally courageous as to speak out on these vital issues in our nation! A tragically shocking number of Christians did not vote their values in the last election. They must stand before God some day and explain why they did not vote to protect innocent human life in the womb and why they didn't vote for the sanctity of marriage! If this blame can be placed on the pastors who kept silent then shame on them - we shouldn't fear what the IRS can do. It was that wicked LBJ who first put these restrictions in place and the sleeping church did nothing about it. I absolutely concur that this failure to take a stand for righteousness reveals a blackened unrepentant heart and could well jeopardize your salvation. Jesus said he who is not with me is against me and he who does not gather, scatters (Luke 11:23).

if you agree with bishop ricken, you have absolutely no idea what religious freedom is all about.
you are free to believe whatever you want
but you are absolutely not free to force your particular brand of euhemerism on anyone else, and
certainly not with government sanction or funding.
it seems as if you would much prefer to live in some other religion-ruled country, such as Iran
or Saudi Arabia.
