The partnership between the two schools began in the fall of 2007, while Fr. Byekwaso was stationed in Hilbert. This year the teachers and children at St. Mary in Hilbert collected donated school supplies, books, backpacks and T-shirts.

In addition to the donations received from parishioners, JanSport of Appleton donated backpacks and the Cheesehead Run of Hilbert donated T-shirts.

Students from Hilbert and Kiwanguzi have also exchanged letters during the school year. Mark Giannoni,

St. Mary fifth and sixth grade teacher, said he and the headmaster at St. Mary in Kiwanguzi have been corresponding by e-mail.

“This has been an enriching experience for all of us,” said Giannoni. “It’s amazing to look at the photos. We can really see how our small efforts are making a positive impact on the lives of the people in Uganda as well as our own.”

The teachers and children have plans to continue their missionary work with St. Mary in Kiwanguzi, Uganda.
