Blue jeans Jesus

By | May 15, 2009

A Catholic church in East Sussex, England, has unveiled its new statue of Jesus. The seven-foot bronze sculpture depicts Jesus in a loose shirt and blue jeans. Fr. David Buckley, the pastor Our Lady Immaculate and St Philip Neri Church said, "We wanted a figure of Christ not in suffering but dynamic and welcoming."

What is striking about the work – besides the jeans – is the unseen wind that moves Jesus’ clothes. Whatever your feeling about this modern depiction of Jesus, it is helpful to pause as we near Pentecost and remember the role of the Holy Spirit in Jesus’ ministry and the life of the church.
