Bishop Ricken opposes legislative proposals

“The mandate would require pharmacies owned and operated by Catholic health care facilities to violate the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services, which states unequivocally, ‘Catholic health institutions may not promote or condone contraceptive practices,'” he wrote.

“As the Bishop of nearly 350,000 Catholics in Northeastern Wisconsin, I must express my deep concern over these proposals and their moral consequences. If passed, either measure will force organizations and citizens to act contrary to their religious beliefs,” the bishop added.

According to the Wisconsin Catholic Conference, the state Assembly and Senate hope to agree on a proposed biennial budget by July 1, the day upon which the current budget expires.
