St. Norbert College announced this week that Chicago Auxiliary Bishop Thomas Paprocki, known to hockey fans as “The Holy Goalie,” will make an appearance in De Pere Nov. 5.

According to St. Norbert’s Mike Counter, Bishop Paprocki will don the goalie uniform and take a few pucks in the net from the Green Knights hockey team on Nov. 5, 3:15 p.m., at the Cornerstone Community Center. He’ll also share some words of faith with the hockey team.

Bishop Paprocki has been playing floor hockey since he was a boy, and in recent years has suited up to practice with the National Hockey League’s Chicago Blackhawks. In his spare time, Bishop Paprocki plays goalie in an over-30, no-check league in Chicago.

According to Counter, Bishop Paprocki will also attend the Green Kngihts’ game against Bethel University on Friday, Nov. 6, at Cornerstone Community Center. His appearance in De Pere was facilitated by Norbertine Fr. James Baraniak, who is a board member of Catholic Athletes for Christ. Fr. Baraniak intends to bring other board members to the college during the year to meet with St. Norbert athletes.

Incidentally, Bishop Paprocki is a former classmate of Green Bay’s Bishop David Ricken. Both attended Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome. No word on whether Bishop Ricken will attend the practice to cheer on his former classmate.

Watch for Jeff Kurowski’s story in an upcoming edition of The Compass, along with plenty of photos of “The Holy Goalie.”
