Health care debate

By | March 15, 2010

The debate on health care reform should get a little more heated with the announcement that the Catholic Health Association supports the current health reform legislation proposed by the Senate.

Under the title “The Time is Now for Health Reform” in its March 15 newsletter, Sr. Carol Keehan, a Daughter of Charity and CHA’s president and CEO, wrote: “As I watched our president present his plan to pass the health reform legislation, it was clear this is an historic opportunity to make great improvements in the lives of so many Americans. Is it perfect? No. Does it cover everyone? No. But is it a major first step? Yes.”

She goes on to address the abortion question, which the U.S. Bishops have made clear is a deal breaker. Sr. Keehan notes that, in the current proposal, people who want a policy which fund abortion, they “must write a separate personal check for the cost of that coverage”
