Slingshots and hidden cameras

Instead of a slingshot, Rose, the modern-day David, uses new media in an attempt to knock down the abortion provider giant, which reportedly performed more than 305,000 medical and surgical abortions in 2007.

When she was a freshman at UCLA, Rose started Live Action, a pro-life group that uses hidden video cameras to uncover questionable and sometimes illegal practices at Planned Parenthood clinics around the country.

Local readers might remember hearing about Live Action’s video taken at the Planned Parenthood facility in Grand Chute in September 2009. In that video, two college-age women, one pretending to be 10 weeks pregnant, entered the clinic, asking if the 10-week-old fetus had a heartbeat. They were erroneously told, among other things, that babies do not have heartbeats until 17 weeks’ gestation, and that an abortion is safer than childbirth.

In another hidden video from June 2008, an abortion clinic worker explained to a Live Action representative posing as a 13-year-old pregnant girl how to get an abortion out of state — even though the clinic worker was told the man who impregnated the girl was in his 30s.

In an interview last April, Rose said that one of Live Action’s goals is to have Planned Parenthood’s public funding curtailed. “When we released the undercover video from Memphis (Tenn.) showing sex abuse cover-up at a Planned Parenthood, the Tennessee Legislature voted to defund PP up to $1.1 million,” Rose told reporter Bob Parks.

“Planned Parenthood is a billion-dollar organization with nearly $350 million of government funding,” said Rose in a Compass article in January 2010. “Do we really want to subsidize an organization that gives women in need atrocious misinformation and predatory abortion practices?”

Live Action’s latest hidden video, released Feb. 1, has caused some lawmakers to ask the same question. (View the video at

In the video, a man and a woman, posing as a pimp and underage sex worker, are told by a New Jersey Planned Parenthood clinic manager how to secure secret abortions, STD testing and contraception for other underage female sex slaves. The manager tells them to have the underage girls lie about their age because state law would require the clinic to report them as cases of statutory rape and child abuse. Finally, she tells the pimp that he can get cheaper contraception for the girls by claiming they are students.

Rep. Mike Pence, R-Ind., reacted to the video on Feb. 3. “To say it is an outrage is an understatement. The time has come to deny any and all federal funding to Planned Parenthood,” said Pence, who introduced the “Title X Abortion Provider Prohibition Act” on Jan. 7. H.R. 217 would “prohibit family planning grants from being awarded to any entity that performs abortions.” According to Catholic News Service, the legislation now has 154 co-sponsors in the House.

Lila Rose and her band of youthful pro-life followers are doing what established pro-life groups have not been able to accomplish: strike terror in the heart of Planned Parenthood. They’ve done it in a clever and conniving way: by using Planned Parenthood’s own spokespeople to reveal dirty secrets about the abortion industry. In Rose’s words: “Planned Parenthood (does not) deserve a dime of the hundreds of millions they receive in federal funding from taxpayers. Congress must cease funding and the Department of Justice should investigate this corrupt organization immediately.”
