“I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. Choose life, then, that you and your descendants may live…” (Dt 30:19).
May 1 was a day of contrasts. A day of life and of death.
In Rome, the beatification of Pope John Paul II took place, a celebration of his life — both on earth and now, as we believe, sharing in the glory of God’s house. Hundreds of thousands filled Vatican City and the streets of Rome to share in the joy and love.
In Pakistan, Osama bin Laden met death. The admitted mastermind of 9/11 and the deaths of thousands died as he had lived, in the middle of violence and revenge.
The words above, from the Old Testament, were surely familiar to both men. Both had faced war and hatred, lived in eras of violence. God offered loved and peace to both. Blessed John Paul responded in faith to God’s offer. Bin Laden chose a different path. Both men made their choices. As we all must. Life or death.
