It was 60 years ago today, Feb. 6, 1952, that Queen Elizabeth II ascended the throne. This year will be full of celebrations marking the monarch’s diamond jubilee. However, today will be a somber day for Elizabeth, no doubt. We should not forget that it is also the 60th anniversary of the death of her father, King George VI. Elizabeth, traveling in Kenya with her husband, Prince Philip, when she learned of her father’s death, was 25 years old.
Not many of us can imagine what ascending a throne is like, but most of us have lost someone dear to us: a parent, a sibling, a spouse. Today, as we join with our British cousins, in congratulating the Queen, let us also join in prayer for her and her family as they remember the loss of their father, grandfather and uncle. No doubt, many of us will also want to remember our own dads. Here is one London Catholic parish’s thoughts on the day.
Also Fox News has a nice article on the history of the Queen’s accession, 60 years ago.
