White House due to religious freedom challenges, it was good to hear some positive news. On June 15, President Barack Obama announced a new immigration policy that will halt the exportation of undocumented young adults who were brought to this country as minors.
Catholic leaders, along with others, have been calling for such a measure. Legislation, known as the DREAM Act, had been proposed but seemed to hit an impasse. Obama used executive power, called prosecutorial discretion, to end deportations of young people. An estimated 800,000 young people will be eligible to receive a deferred action on deportation for two years, plus a work permit.
