SLC President Dr. Chris Domes, assisted by Sr. Laura Wolf, chair of the Silver Lake College board of directors, presented Bishop Morneau with a Doctor of Humane Letters degree during the winter commencement ceremony on Dec. 13 at the Franciscan Center for Music Education and Performance.

“I’m very appreciative. I’m very humbled by it,” Bishop Morneau said after the ceremony, during which he also presented the commencement address.

”We are so happy to be able to honor Bishop Morneau in this way,” Domes said. “He serves as such a clear example to our students of a servant leader. Silver Lake College celebrates him as a teacher, author, poet, pastor and leader in our diocese. Bishop Morneau’s contribution to the college, to the church, to our diocese and beyond is our motivation for presenting this honorary degree.”

Bishop Morneau, who serves as pastor of Resurrection Parish in Allouez, was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Green Bay in 1966 and taught at Silver Lake College for more than a decade in the 1960s and 1970s.

“Bishop Morneau is a much-beloved former Silver Lake College faculty member,” said Dean Vicki I. Ansorge, vice president of Academic and Student Affairs. “He exemplifies what is best about academics at Silver Lake. He is both a scholar and a servant leader. I can’t think of anyone more deserving of this honor.”

Bishop Morneau was one of the first American priests to be named a bishop by Pope John Paul II. He has served as a presenter at Silver Lake College’s Fr. Bill Zimmer Forum. A prolific poet and author of books and articles, Bishop Morneau has published works including “The Color of Gratitude,” “A Splash of Sunshine,” “Notes of Thanksgiving” and “Embracing a Generous Life.”
