Happy Easter!

By Bishop David Ricken | March 23, 2016

He is risen! He is alive!

Can you imagine going to pay your respects at the tomb of your best friend when you discover that his body is not there? And then, a familiar voice speaks and says to you, “Who are you looking for?” When you turn to face the man with the familiar voice, you recognize that Jesus, raised from the dead, is standing right in front of you. Your heart floods with warmth and your mind with disbelief; and your spirit is filled with wonder.

So was the experience of Mary Magdalene, one of Jesus’ disciples and friends. When Jesus calls her by name, she knows who he is. She was the first of the disciples to witness the risen Lord.

While our experience of the risen Jesus may not be as dramatic as was Mary Magdalene’s, we too can experience that risen presence. Jesus is just as alive today as he was on Easter Sunday and he wants to be with you, to walk with you, to journey with you in your life. He is inviting you to be a “disciple on the way,” just as Mary was. This weekend, accept his invitation to celebrate Mass as part of your Easter commitment and remember to go to the sacrament of reconciliation beforehand.

I hope you have a joyous Easter Day gathering with your family and friends and a beautiful 50-day journey through the Easter season as it concludes with the solemnity of Pentecost when Jesus sends the awesome outpouring of the Holy Spirit.
