KAUKAUNA — The 48th annual Holy Cross Men’s Open, a basketball tournament that attracts former high school standouts and college players, including some who have played professionally, tips off April 1 at Carl Giordana Gym at the Holy Cross School site (Kaukauna Catholic School System). Tournament play continues April 2 and 3 and picks up again April 8, 9 and 10. Proceeds support Kaukauna Catholic School athletics.

A three-point shootout is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Saturday, April 9. Raffles, food and beverages are also a part of the event. Proceeds from this year’s raffle will support a lobby restoration project.

Steve Baker, who played at UW-Green Bay, won last year’s MVP honors. Baker helped Lids Team Sports/The Bar win the tournament championship 78-75 over Hurley Insurance of Appleton. Former Lawrence University standout John Dekker of Hurley was named “Most Popular Player.” Doug and Deb Longsine of Kimberly were named “Outstanding Fans.” An all-tournament team is selected each year.

Dekker, Ric Cobb, Jeff Noordgaard, Roy Boone, Steve Showalter and Josh Metzger are among those who have won MVP honors over the years. The 16-team tournament features a single elimination format.

Lee Vander Zanden, tournament director; Dan Verbeten, a charter member of the tournament committee; the entire staff and a dedicated group of volunteers make the tournament a wonderful family-friendly event. I plan to attend again this year. If you are looking for some good basketball, great food and fellowship, makes plans to attend the Holy Cross Men’s Open.
