In the Gospel of John (13:35) Jesus says, “I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another. This is how all will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
You might be asking yourself how we accomplish this in today’s hectic world with its many challenges and broken relationships. As missionary disciples, one way we do this is through joyous acts of kindness. These acts of kindness include sharing our time, talents and treasures with those less fortunate and in need of God’s love. A great way we can do this is by supporting the Bishop’s Appeal. This year’s theme is “Embracing a Life of Discipleship.”
The Bishop’s Appeal supports the many ministries of our 16-county diocese. Your generous gift impacts thousands of people’s lives and helps them develop a relationship with Jesus.
Through the Emmaus Lay Ministry Program, you made it possible for Julie to gain the knowledge and skills to train new care ministers at St. Mary Parish in Greenville. For more than 10 years, Julie has been visiting an elderly gentleman. Together, they pray, discuss life’s challenges and opportunities and share holy Communion. With your support, more than 1,400 care ministers bring holy Communion and God’s love and mercy to the homebound and those living in nursing homes. This ministry makes it possible for many homebound people to stay connected with their parish family.
With your support of the Appeal, you help families heal. Through professional counseling programs at Catholic Charities, a family hurting after tragically losing their oldest son to drug addiction is able to find hope and healing. A husband and father with a hidden gambling addiction that leads to bankruptcy is able to turn his life around. He gains the knowledge and tools to restore his family’s financial stability by attending financial health counseling. Through family counseling he tackles his addictive behavior and regains his family’s trust. You help restore and renew families.
You assist with building strong, loving Catholic families and communities. Through adoption services at Catholic Charities, you help children find their forever homes. A young, married couple eager to start their family is finally able to hear the words Mom and Dad. You make these dreams come true!
Children are learning to know and love Jesus because of you. Your gift supports Catholic schools and religious education programs. Our Catholic schools are the center of discipleship. Students are encouraged to share their faith, engage in daily prayer and receive an excellent education. With support from the Appeal, teachers receive the training and tools to encourage our young people to develop a friendship with Jesus. You help form missionary disciples!
These are just a few ways your gift makes a difference. Please prayerfully consider making a generous pledge to the Bishop’s Appeal. Gifts, no matter how big or small, are needed and appreciated. As we share our love for one another, we embrace a life of discipleship.
