Compass seeks donations for prison ministry outreach

ALLOUEZ — The Compass is seeking donations from readers to provide subscriptions for inmates at three local correctional institutions: Oshkosh, Green Bay and Redgranite. A private grant that had funded these subscriptions was not renewed this year and The Compass is asking readers for assistance to continue this outreach ministry.

“Many inmates have no visitors for years at a time,” stated Mary Armbrust, Pastoral Care and Ministry coordinator serving the Diocese of Green Bay. “The Compass may be the first contact from the Catholic Church that invites inmates into a relationship with Jesus. Quite often, once persons are incarcerated, they turn to God to fill the emptiness they experience. Having a copy of The Compass is a visible reminder to each inmate who receives one that she/he is not forgotten and is an outward sign of the great news of God’s love, compassion and mercy.”

The goal is to raise $1,000 to cover the cost of 46 subscriptions for one year.

“I invite you to prayerfully consider a gift to help us provide copies of The Compass to the correctional facilities in the Diocese of Green Bay to meet our chaplains’ requests,” said Compass advertising and marketing manager Amy Kawula. “These men need reading material, especially spiritual material. The Compass strives to extend its merciful arms to those in greatest need. Without your support, we cannot reach the three correctional facilities in the Diocese of Green Bay.”

Deacon Jeff Prickette of St. Mary Parish in Appleton, who ministers to inmates at Oshkosh Correctional Institution, said he has personally witnessed “how much (inmates) enjoy receiving and reading The Compass on a weekly basis.”

“Not only does it keep them updated on things happening in the parishes and within the diocesan offices, it also offers wonderful articles on our faith, which they take very seriously,” added Deacon Prickette. “I have seen several of these men come back to Christ during their incarceration, and The Compass is one of the tools that helps them on their way back to Jesus.”

Readers can send tax deductible donations, payable to The Compass, to: The Compass, Attn: Prison Ministry, PO Box 23825, Green Bay, WI  54305-3825 or, call (920) 272-8208 to process credit card payment.

If more than $1,000 is raised, The Compass will set up a fund to continue offering these subscriptions to additional inmates, according to Kawula.
