De Pere students visit convent

They meet the sisters and learn about the life of women religious

Editor's Note: Recently, 52 third and fourth graders from St. Mary Parish, De Pere Summer Religious Education visited the convent of the Franciscan Sisters of the Holy Cross at Bay Settlement. Sr. Laura Zelten, director of Vocation Ministries, talked to them about her experiences. The youngsters also played games that taught them about the faith and the life of sisters. Members of the community led tours of the convent.

Here are some letters the students wrote to the sisters thanking them for the day at the convent:

Dear Sister Laura,

Thank you for the wonderful afternoon. I really liked the game where we need to keep the ball on the Frisbee. I liked this game because it was hard and it was really fun.

I also liked the soda because I was hot and it was refreshing.

Your Friend,

Eric Smits

Dear Sr. Laura and Sisters of St. Francis,

Thank you for inviting us to your home. I liked the view and I liked all the sisters. They all had patience and good imagination. Your house is very nice.

Your Friend,

Valerie

At base Settlement the sisters were the nicest they could be. They played games with us. They gave us a tour of their house and they actually tried to get to know us. I had a lot of fun.

--Shelby Bake, Grade 3

Dear Sr. Laura and Sisters of St. Francis,

Thank you for inviting us to your home. I liked the water balloon game best. I learned that people in convents can't be married and that you can't have pets.

Dear Sister Laura,

Thank you for the wonderful afternoon. I really liked the tour. I had a lot of fun. Thanks for letting us come and letting the other sisters watch us and help us in the games. The treat and the drinks were really nice because I was thirsty and I really love carmel apples and pop. The chapel and the library were very nicer. It's cool to have your own library. The chapel was very pretty. I liked how at the beginning that you talked to us about the convent. The St. Francis statue in the front was very pretty. I had lots of fun, wish to come again.

Your Friend,

Alyssa Chamberlain

Dear Sr. Laura and Sisters of St. Francis,

Thank you for inviting us to your home. I learned that St. Francis was a really nice guy. I was surprised that we got to play games.

Your Friend,

Dear Sister Laura,

Thank you for the wonderful afternoon. I really liked when we played the "Fishing for Facts" game and the water balloon game. They were all great. The lolly pop and orange soda were good. Being a nun looks fun. Have a nice day. I had a great time.

Your Friend,

Alex Buratti

Dear Sisters,

I really liked the games and tour. I really like the game that was the water balloon game. I liked the chaple. I liked the chaple because it's different than our chaple. I liked the water balloon game because it was daring and fun

Your Friend,

Jenna Hermanson

Dear Sister Laura,

Thank you for the wonderful afternoon. I really liked the games and I especially like seeing your home and you. I also liked the chaple because I never saw a chaple in a building that big. And I liked when you passed around your stuff in your backpack.

Your Friend,

Trevor McKeefry
