Singers raise funds for church

CD by Kaukauna foursome to be sold at Eucharistic Congress on Oct. 13-14

KAUKAUNA - While many musical people contribute to their parishes by singing and accompanying during services, four members of St. Mary of the Annunciation Parish in Kaukauna are using their talents to raise funds for the church.

Colleen Haak, who has directed the parish choir for 20 years, asked her friends Tom Kersten, Donna Nagan and Jim Hatchell to record a CD of spiritual music with her.

"The CD evolved from the request of a friend who wanted a cassette tape of spiritual music as a Christmas gift," Haak says. She says the foursome sorted through a lot of music before deciding on the 15 songs on the CD, Speak to My Heart.

Haak says they gave the CD to St. Mary's as a gift to use as a fundraiser. Initially, it will be sold through the parish office and at the Eucharistic Congress Oct. 13-14 at St. Norbert College. The CD costs $15 and all the proceeds go directly to St. Mary Parish.

Hatchell, who has been in the choir since 1997, says the whole process was exciting and memorable. "It was very rewarding to work with such a talented group of friends."

Hatchell, Haak, and Nagan have all sung in quartets. Haak sings at weddings and Nagan frequently sings for retreats at Monte Alverno Retreat Center in Appleton and elsewhere. Hatchell starred in June as "Daddy" Warbucks in the Kaukauna Community Players production of Annie.

Kersten is the music director and liturgy coordinator at St. John Nepomucene Parish, Little Chute. He plays for weddings and played in the orchestra for Annie as well as other local theater productions. He has played piano for Mass at St. Mary's since he was in high school.

Haak says the CD took about a year to compile and produce and that she's excited to see the project completed.

"'Speak to My Heart' is what we all hope these songs will do for people," Nagan says. "God's hand is all over this work," she says, adding that she hopes people will feel God's presence and love when they listen to the music.

The CD features the following songs: Ave Maria, Our Father, Thy Word, El Shaddai, Father's Eyes, I Long for the Day, In His Time, Surely the Presence, Love Crucified Arose, If I Could Just Sit With You Awhile, All I Have to Be, On My Knees, and three songs from the musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat - Any Dream Will Do, Close Every Door and Go, Go, Go Joseph.

People interested in obtaining a copy of the CD can call Julie Simons at (920)766-9097 or the St. Mary parish office at (920)766-1445.
