Appeal for help

Annual Bishop's Appeal helps parishes and individuals, but to do that it needs your help

By Tony Staley
Compass Editor

For the last several weeks, The Compass has been running front page stories on the annual Bishop's Appeal under way in all parishes of the Green Bay Diocese.

This week, we're inviting you to contribute generously to the Bishop's Appeal, which supports numerous programs and services for parishes and individuals.

How does the Bishop's Appeal benefit people and parishes?

Parishes with schools and/or religious education programs are helped by consultants in the Department of Total Catholic Education. Most - if not all - weeks, groups of educators are in the diocesan offices attending a class, workshop or meeting to improve the educational services their parishes offer. Consultants also give advice over the phone and visit parishes. The department sponsors or co-sponsors workshops and the annual Congress. Bishop's Appeal helps make that possible.

-- Bishop's Appeal helps provide support and continuing education for all our priests.

-- Bishop's Appeal helps train parish staffs so they can offer the Rites of Christian Initiation of Adults.

-- Bishop's Appeal, through the Worship Office, advises parishes when they need to build a new church or renovate an existing one or if they have questions about improving liturgies.

-- Bishop's Appeal helps make possible marriage preparation and marriage and family enrichment and parenting programs.

-- Bishop's Appeal helped make possible the highly successful Renew 2000 offered the last three years in homes and parishes throughout our diocese.

-- Bishop's Appeal helps provide counseling services to individuals and families with difficulties.

-- Bishop's Appeal helps deliver news, information, education and useful features to homes weekly through The Compass.

-- Bishop's Appeal helps evangelize through the Internet with a web page at www.gbdioc.org.

-- Bishop's Appeal, through the Finance and Accounting Department, helps provide advice to parish bookkeepers.

-- Bishop's Appeal helps to provide medical insurance and retirement programs to parish personnel.

-- Bishop's Appeal helps train pastoral associates, parish religious education coordinators and deacons and then to provide a peer support network to assist them in their work.

-- Bishop's Appeal helps promote the cause of life and other social issues, including services to the hearing and visually impaired and new immigrants to our area.

How does Bishop's Appeal help? In these and many more ways. Now, the Bishop's Appeal needs your help. Please give generously and help it surpass the $4.1 million target.
