Summoned to Serve|
Praying with Sunday's Scriptures
|March 11, Second Sunday of Lent, Cycle C
Reading I: Genesis 15: 5-12 ,17-18
Reading II: Philippians 3:17-4:1
Gospel: Luke 9:28-36
By Marge Mattice
Focus: God's love is transforming and life-giving. Each of us can
pass on God's love.
Merciful and gracious God, it is our memories of your loving
touch in the past and our trust in your transforming presence in
days to come that shape and mold our hearts. In your wisdom,
guide us as brothers and sisters of your Son, Jesus, to bring
your love to a waiting world. We ask this in Jesus' name. Amen.
Scripture Sharing: What thought, line or image from the Scripture
readings caught your attention?
Reflection: Our lives are a grace-filled blend of memories and
hopes. Memories of past events, growth, pain, meaningful
relationships, misunderstandings; hopes of finding meaning in our
lives, good things for ourselves, family and friends, success in
careers. Reflecting back on today's Gospel, how much of our past,
present and future is rooted in our hope that God wills and
desires to transform us?
In the first reading, Abram sought God's covenantal love and was
promised a home. In St. Paul's reflection, we are called to
realize that our promised home is not in the things of this
earth. Our ultimate home will be when our earthly bodies are
transformed into eternity, into a complete union with the God who
has loved us from the beginning.
1. How have memories of past events and relationships shaped your
hopes for the future?
2. What role does Scripture play in helping you understand
memories of the past? How does Scripture shape your belief in a
3. Has there been an event in your life that only in retrospect
has been God's transforming love for you?
4. Through these readings what is God asking you to do for others
as part of the body of Christ, his Church?
Action Response: How are you 'summoned to serve'?
1. Into what family, work, local or global situation could you
bring the transforming presence of God?
2. Pray for that person who has brought God's transforming love
into your life.
3. How does God's transforming love 'summon you to serve' in your
parish or community?
Individuals offer their intentions to bring to prayer.
O loving Jesus, you offer us your transforming presence, giving
us hope and courage. We need to journey on. At every turn, you
are the light and glory of the Father's love. May we make you
known in a world that longs for light and glory. We ask this
through the Father in your Spirit. Amen.
