Pulaski family wins award

Skalecki family honored at NCEA in Milwaukee

The family of Dennis and Shirley Skalecki of Pulaski received a Catholic Identity Award Wednesday at the National Catholic Educational Association convention under way this week in Milwaukee.

The Skaleckis were honored because of the impact the entire family has had through parish involvement and personal witness.

The Catholic Identity Awards were awarded in each of the state's five dioceses to recognize efforts to shape Catholic identity throughout Wisconsin. Recipients from the other dioceses were:

-- Sr. Virginia Stone, BVM, a former teacher and principal, now active in pastoral ministry in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee

-- The Harold and Marion Hunt family, from the Diocese of La Crosse, which has had all 16 children graduate from McDonell Catholic High School, Chippewa Falls;

-- Sr. Emelita Michael, SSSF, a teacher and principal, who helped develop academic and religious education standards for Catholic schools in the Diocese of Madison

-- The leadership team at Holy Rosary Parish in the Diocese of Superior, for working together to promote Catholic identity in all areas of parish life.

Also honored at the breakfast, sponsored by William H. Sadlier, Inc., a publisher of educational materials for Catholic schools and parish schools of religion, for outstanding contribution to Catholic education was Sr. Lourdes Sheehan, RSM, associate general secretary of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. She received the 2001 F. Sadlier Dinger Award.

Sr. Lourdes previously served for many years as the Education Secretary for the bishops' conference, and as executive director of the NCEA's Department of Chief Administrators of Catholic Education.

John Palladino, principal of All Saints School in Omaha, received the Sr. Rose Anita McDonnell, IHM Award for mathematics education.
