Sixth graders enjoy tutoring time
Program connects middle school with St. Pius pre-schoolers
By Maddie Drusch, Louis Griesbach and Nathan Vande Walle
Mrs. (Betty) Ehret's third hour science class from St. Joseph Middle School helps the pre-school children at St. Pius learn new concepts. The sixth grade tutors plan to watch as the pre-schoolers progress through their education. The sixth grade students, teachers and chaperones walked to St. Pius to complete the activities with the pre-school children.
The first cross-age tutoring sessions were held on Oct. 31. Since it was Halloween, some of the pre-schoolers were dressed up in their costumes. The sixth grade tutors decorated Halloween treat bags for their small buddies, taught them songs, read poems and helped them color. The pre-schoolers learned about the color of the rainbow.
Everyone had a terrific time. Before leaving St. Pius, the sixth graders shared a poem that named specific animals. The pre-schoolers made sounds of those animals.
