Bishop Banks comments on case in Boston
Here is a statement from Bp. Robert Banks regarding the case against John Geoghan, a former priest in the Archdiocese of Boston:
"Local reports that I was involved in the infamous Geoghan case in Boston some 15 years ago are true. Well-intentioned decisions, made then on the basis of expert professional opinion, proved to be inadequate in stopping Fr. Geoghan and led to tragic consequences. I very much regret my part in those decisions, however well intentioned, and I am especially sorry that more people were hurt because of them.
"My experience in Boston has helped me here in the Diocese of Green Bay. I have taken steps so that a similar situation would never arise here. We have refined our sexual misconduct policy and have educated our priests and church personnel, both professional and volunteer, on the importance and seriousness of this policy.
"We have fine priests both here and in the Archdiocese of Boston. Unfortunately, the publicity about the Geoghan case raises again the issue of pedophilia and priests. It is a shame that the very, very few who be-tray trust cast a shadow on so many. This case does not help, and it gives the false impression that bishops do not care."
