ALLOUEZ -- The hardest birthday, for Bishop Robert Banks, was 20 years ago.
"I remember that I didn't like 60, because that meant you're old," he said. "But I found out that it really doesn't mean you're old. As a matter of fact, the 60s are pretty good; and the 70s aren't bad either."
Bishop Banks, bishop emeritus of Green Bay, turns 80 next week, on Feb. 26. He doesn't have any special plans, but he will preside at morning Mass with the diocesan employees and a reception with them will follow.
For Bishop Banks, turning 60 led to a great decade, because he was named as Bishop of Green Bay and installed here on Dec. 5, 1990, when he was 62. That began a new phase in life that, in many ways, continues to this day. Full story ...
